Not so far in his pro career.

He's currently playing his third year in the NHL and he's still a winger.

He played 124 games as a center in junior and he's played 163 games in the NHL as a winger.... at this point I think it's safe to call him a RW.

If he was drafted by the Maple Leafs this would probably be a different story. I imagine he would've played center right out of the gate and continued to play there since it's Torontos weakest position aside from Goaltending.

Kessel just scored.
Whatever offers have been presented, add another first on top.

I disagree. We can easily fit Getzlaf at $12.8 even with the salary cap drop without actually impacting much of our team.. And i've no doubt that cap will increase as the years pass.

It's a lot of money, but it's the only way to ensure we get the player we need. And i'm okay with that.

More goals. Goals over the past 2 seasons:

1. Stamkos - 105
2. Perry - 87
3. Iginla - 75
4. D. Sedin - 71
5. Ovechkin - 70
6. Kessel - 69

Sure, he doesn't bring much (read: anything) to the defensive side of the game, but the point remains that Phil Kessel belongs to an elite echelon of goal scorers in the NHL today.

That counts for something. Or a lot of things.

Leafs have roughly 17 million cap space next year with some notable FA's that they will look to re-sign. They won't fit Getzlaf in for that kind of money, no team can and no team will.

I'm really, really high on Hertl (I think he has top-line potential, good defense, elite physicality, improving skating), But it would be a silly deal for the Leafs to make. That said, I dunno if the Sharks can take his salary... Maybe if you took Handzus/Clowe back?

But yeah, I'd think Toronto could get a better deal than that. Despite what HF thinks of him, Kessel is an elite forward. I'd kill to put him on Thornton's wing.

No can do there, Pavelski's a non-starter. Plus, he's UFA same time as Kessel, eh?

Kane's got a new contract on a manageable cap hit and he just scored 30 goals last year.

Kessel's 1 year away from UFA status and he's scored 30+ goals in the last 5 years.

You hate Kessel as a Bruins fan so you really shouldn't be talking about him at all given how you'd be completely biased against him. I don't hate Kane or Kessel so I would assume I'd have a more neutral view for the 2. There's no doubt that I think Kane's the better piece for a rebuilding team, but you ask a Cup contender which player you take for a run and I think Kessel would be the better one. If you want stats, just look at how he produced with the Bruins a few years back. Can't ignore facts.
LOL..."facts"

Komisarek will be amnestied at $4.5 million. Kadri is the only notable free agent and I'd wager his caphit will be very similar to what it is right now (artificially high because of bonuses).

Dreger and TSN are becoming a disgrace. They have been making up a lot of trashy rumors just to get traffic to their network. As soon as I saw them say "there is no rumors but there might be some interest in kessel ya never know" I knew what they were doing. Low and behold each day it got a little more..a rumor here and there.

There is no rumors at all it is made up by TSN and its working. People are talking about...tweeting about it and fake insiders making up rumors.

lock the thread imo

We would never give Getz that much. I wouldn't want someone on our team who would only play for us for that kind of money. Almost double what he is worth. Regardless, a Komi buyout leaves us plenty of room, and we would just need to resign Kadri, Komarov, Gunnarsson and Franson (All of which can be signed for 1 or 2 mill more than Komi's cap hit.

Then it's a hole on this team that won't be plugged any time soon. Some Leaf fans might be okay with that. I wouldn't be.

Leafs need a top 6 forward in their 20's and a 1st or top prospect. It was Pavelski or Couture or hell be dealt elsewhere.

Okay, but Pavelski is not just a top-6 forward. He's a top-line forward who can be your #1RW or #1B center, while playing big minutes on the PK and Selke caliber even strength defense, AND being on of the best in the league on faceoffs. Kessel's obviously the more offensively talented player, but Pavelski is, as Brian Burke said, a Swiss-army knife. He can do it all with anyone on his wings. I'd consider Pavs straight up for Kessel (which the Leafs would rightfully decline), but I'm not adding Hertl to Pavs, or a mid-late first.
