Gotta believe this is his last contract. Thought they were grooming macdermid for the role. We need to maintain a HW or 2 unless we want lucic doing the fighting. Camara is tough as nails but only 6 feet and a couple years away.

Any of a number of players who're easily available when the time comes.

A good enforcer isn't as easy to replace as people think. In system they don't have anyone, Tyler Randall is a very good fighter but not a good player, lack of speed is a major concern with him as well as conditioning, though he seems in better shape this year than last. Bobby Robins is a willing fighter and great story but his skill level is questionable as well.

They could look at over age players in juniors or a trade for someone like Ferland in the Calgary system.

It will be very tough to replace Thorntons leadership and playing ability that is combined with his above average fighting ability.

This is another reason McQuaids name should not even be mentioned in trade talks today.

If fourth line right wing/enforcer is our greatest concern.....

This is something I am not going to worry about.

The team will find somebody and to be honest I don't think Julien is going to go out of his way to play a fighter who can't skate.

Thornton wouldn't be in the league if not for his fighting skills, but as enforcers go he is probably one of the best, because he can play.

Put me down as not a fan of fighting D, glad to have him but DO NOT WANT FILLING ROLE OF FIGHTER... so much easier to deal with losing a forward to a misconduct or even a broken hand.

MacDermid isn't a heavyweight, he's an average middleweight. That's been said on here a hundred times but people still ignore it. MacDermid was never going to be Thornton's replacement and Thornton is back for another year anyhow. Rather pointless thread imo.

Thornton's been with the bruins for 6 seasons now, it would be different to see a plug dressing for 4 minutes a night who makes you cringe when he touches the puck

With Thornton there are many times I'm looking to Shawn to pot one before our "top scorers". I get a positive excitement with him in the O zone ... not quite so much on the D side but you can count on a straight forward play to get it out if he's involved.

Hopefully no one.

<- Hates the "enforcer" role

Thornton's Bruins career...

96 fights

29 goals, 36 assists, 64 points.

Team leader

Community leader, only one in Boston year round IIRC

All as a 12th forward. He is one of those guys that won't be missed until he is gone. I guy who would fight to get the team going...fight to defend teammates...fight to answer the bell...

If a Bruins or hockey fan cannot appreciate what a Thornton has brought and brings to this team, well, I don't know what to say. Many a night he sparked them to give a better effort by doing whatever he needed to do.

How do you figure that? Have hardly ever heard anything bad or negative about Thornton. Most stuff is positive, he continues to do his job at a high level.

Going a bit off topic, a guy I would do whatever it takes to get here next year, if the Devils let him reach free agency, is David Clarkson.

You know one of those "plugs" that had an old coach come in and let him play his game and now gets in 15 fights a year and scores 25-30 goals

Useless enforcers, no place in the new NHL I tell ya
