you guys *****ed about the yankees for years. mlb castrated big market teams like the yankees and red sox. this is your new baseball, folks. keep the asset for as long as you can before you have to pay the big money.
I agree, it is smarter. The thing is, this organization does dumb things like give Ortiz a 2 yr deal after a major injury, but worries about keeping a guys service time down.

I'm guessing Ortiz will cost more over these 2 seasons then JBJ's potential in that 1 year of service time he'd gain.

that one year of bradley is more valuable than just giving ortiz money and two years though.

Casey Kelly out for the year with TJ and Fuentes is struggling in the minors. The only decent piece left from the Gonzalez trade for SD is in Chicago, and all SD got for him is a middle of the road reliever

And what exactly did we get out of that trade? Pretty ironic that you're laughing at how hosed San Diego got, when the Sox basically used him as nothing but a way to get out from under some contracts they didn't want. Now that's something to laugh about...

And there is a possibility of getting 2 potential top of the rotation starters in the deal.

We got one of the top first basemen in the league, not really sure where you're going with this. My post wasn't talking about the Redsox at all, just laughing at the misfortune and ineptitude of the Padres organization.

astute baseball people still scratch their heads over that one- watch a lot of baseball network and anytime this comes up the hosts usually cant believe they 'had their cake and eat it to' getting those two pitching prospects added was nuts

it's why i have confidence in cherington if he were given the keys to things in red sox land. i don't think he was behind most of the signings and trades that have gone on but that dodgers trade seemed to be a really smart one and i can't see lucchino making that without the promise of magic johnson appearing on charlie moore.

cherington was a disciple of theo and one of the things theo learned in his time here was that you never overpay for relief pitching. he overpaid for bailey and might have overpaid for hanrahan. the victorino signing might be the worst of the winter and the napoli one almost was until they discovered that he doesn't have a right hip anymore.

i think cherington is a smart guy but i wonder if he'll be given the keys. he seems to have a bit more control now, things here in fort myers are a lot less crazy save for ace acting like an *******.

gonzalez/crawford/beckett/punto for loney/de la rosa/webster/sands/de jesus. loney's on the rays now though. wonder if he'll have a kotchman like rebirth and people will come out of the woodwork because the red sox didn't sign james loney!

And Hanrahan+Holt(2/3 of pieces to go to Pitt were in Gonzo trade) with Webster and DelaRosa.

spring training numbers are mostly irrelevant but he's put up a .663 ops.

against about triple a level pitching too.

he is what he is.

I meant that he doesn't look completely lost like he has in the past.

I'm sure it'll just be a day-to-day thing and we'll see him in August.

I will never have any sympathy towards the Yankees or their fans but if this goes through then this might be the closest I ever get.

from sports.yahoo.com:

The New York Yankees and Los Angeles Angels are closing in on a trade that would send outfielder Vernon Wells and a large amount of cash to the Bronx, sources told Yahoo! Sports on Sunday.

Wells has a no-trade clause and could reject any deal.

The 34-year-old likely would play left field and move into the Yankees' injury-battered everyday lineup. They are expected to start the season with Curtis Granderson, Mark Teixeira, Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter on the disabled list.

Two years and $42 million remain on the seven-year, $126 million deal Wells signed with Toronto. The Blue Jays dealt Wells to Los Angeles for Mike Napoli and Juan Rivera in January 2011.

Wells, who has four home runs in 36 at-bats this spring, lost his everyday role last season. In the two years since joining the Angels, he is hitting .222 with a .667 OPS.

The Yankees have no A-fraud, Jeter till May and he may be longer, Granderson and Teixeira till June. What a mess worst lineup I've seen since Horace Clarke played second.

They are taking on 13 million of Wells' salary....they must be desperate.

Not hate. Ellsbury just doesn't have a hockey player's mentality.

If by SS you mean Drew, then yes. Iglesias will never hit.

And where are Webster and De La Rosa to start this year?

So if you net it out, they traded a bunch of top, MLB ready type of prospects for AG, then turned around and traded AG for some salary relief (which as a fan, I could give a crap about) and a bunch of propects that weren't quite MLB ready. Pretty sweet deal...
