Trade Ballard for a significant offer, then we have to replace Ballard with a significant offer for another d-man. Same thing. It's a lateral move.

Wouldn't trade Ballard for this season. Wait until the offseason.

OTT is going to realize that the season is lost, so they have no need for current D upgrades. For them, it also makes sense to wait until the offseason.

We could barely afford Ballard + Malhotra + prospects/picks for Alfredsson (Sens keep half of cap hit) + Gonchar once we send down Ebbett and Volpatti.
But this would mean that we're sticking with Schroeder as the 3rd line center for the season + playoffs.

I'd feel bad for sending away Manny.

I'd trade Ballard if Viz could be pried out of Long Island...

Why are we assuming OTT's season is lost? Cup hopes, maybe. They still have a great coach and a goalie playing out of his mind.

Give it 10 games before you start circling their corpse.

Not if you target a #5-6, pending UFA dman.

Odds are, Gillis holds onto Ballard until the offseason. But we may get an offer that cannot be refused. GM's have been known to lose their mind at the deadline, especially for dmen. If Gaustad can return a 1st rd pick...

Spezza is out for a couple of months and Karlsson could be out for the season.
1st line centers and #1 d-men are kind of important players, especially on teams that aren't very deep.

Agreed.

Ballard has been playing terrifically lately (and is playing up to his potential finally, minus the offensive production). But yeah, crowded blueline we're going to have to trade him to the highest bidder in the offseason.

But if we can swap him for a Visnovsky type you have to do that deal.

Especially in such a short season.

If this injury happened in the first two months there's a chance he's back, but Karlson is as good as done this year—remember Bieksa injury?

Why would we downgrade the team? That's the opposite of what we're trying to do here.

If Ballard goes for some obscene package, you can bet that trickles down to the #5-6 defensemen as well. At the end of the day, we're up some young assets, but we're worse off in the immediate present. Not the direction we want to go here.

Who says moving Ballard downgrades the team? He's a #6 dman playing 15:00 a night and providing no offense. Ballard looks as good as he ever has as a Canuck but isn't exactly irreplaceable.

To NYI- Ballard
To Van- Visnovsky

Does that downgrade the team?

Visnovsky is of course an upgrade, but the original premise was trading Ballard and replacing him with a #5-6 defenseman, which depending on how you view Ballard, is either a downgrade or lateral move at best. Visnovsky isn't a typical #5-6 defenseman.

To Col- Ballard, Schroeder, 1st
To Van- O'Reilly, O'Brien

Shane O'Brien is a #5-6 - that's not a downgrade...

If SOB is not a downgrade, then Ballard is overpaid. SOB only makes 2 million. If that's the case, why woukd any GM go bonkers for Ballard, when they could perhaps do so with someone cheaper, for instance, SOB?

1000% agreed. The thought of him back on our team makes me ill.

O'Brien would represent a downgrade on defense but the team as a whole is upgraded. Which is what really matters...

GM's will overpay for guys like O'Brien. There's always little supply and a ton of demand at the deadline for anyone that can eat up minutes on the blueline.

On this team he is. He does however have one solid asset that is of use to us - power play QB.

Yes, if we can use Ballard's cap space for something more useful, like RoR, then yes I'd do it. It's just a matter of making use of that cap space and not letting it go to waste.

On this team, he would be a 5-6 d-man, but that statement doesn't apply to just this team.
