Week of February 4th - 10th: Sunday Papers (stay tuned for more from practice)

Sunday, February 10th Jets and NHL news

Note: Stick to @illegalcurve as we will have all the latest from today’s optional skate at the MTS Centre.

Jets news:

Illegal Curve: Coach Noel post-practice audio. Talks about Byfuglien practicing with the team. Talk turns to Bogosian. Buff expects to play on Tuesday. Discusses importance of win over Senators. Getting past adversity. Kane and Burmistrov embracing the role of penalty killers. Importance of adding speed to PK. Possibly using Montoya in net on Tuesday. Would he flip a coin similar to Alain Vigneault? (joking) Expanded role of Ron Hainsey.

Illegal Curve: Player audio from the optional skate at MTS Centre. Byfuglien and Kane spoke today and Buff was in fine form.

Winnipeg Free Press: Focus on the basics helps bring penalty kill back to life. As coach Noel states and this mirrors what I thought while watching the game, the Jets PK seemed more aggressive than before.

Winnipeg Free Press: Poni isn’t the goat today. The look of surprise on his face when he tipped home the Wellwood shot and scored was classic.

Winnipeg Free Press: Wrinkle in the crease. Before the game had even ended we asked on twitter how long before Montoya’s performance causes people to call into the post-game show with Rick Ralph stating Montoya needs to be the stater. Big kudos to the Big Cubano who played a very solid game yesterday. His positioning was excellent and he discarded the rust he showed against the Islanders.

Winnipeg Sun: Jets ready to take Flyer on Montoya? More on the Jets requirement to make a decision on who should start against the Flyers on Tuesday.

Winnipeg Free Press: Encyclopedia of local sports sees final NHL game. He was a familiar face at the rink and stadium and the Jets held a moment of silence for him before the Jets and Leafs.

Illegal Curve: Jets on a Deadline. Game recaps, video highlights and the NHL.com 3 Stars of the night.

Jets prospect news and affiliate news:

The Telegram: Whale sink IceCaps. Another loss for St. John’s, their third in a row. They have a chance for revenge tonight against Connecticut.

Barrie Colts official site: Colts come up short, lose 5 – 3 to the Saginaw Spirit. Mark Scheifele continues his strong play in the OHL as he finished with a goal and an assist in the loss.

Swift Current Broncos official site: Broncos blank Raiders. Adam Lowry continues to tear up the WHL as his goal and assist helped the Broncos shutout Prince Albert.

Notre Dame Official Athletic Site: Irish Icers hand Michigan a 6-4 loss for series sweep. Jacob Trouba finished with 3 assists on the night although his Michigan team continues to struggle this season.

NHL news:

CBC: IIHF’s Rene Fasel says ego may keep NHL from Olympics. Would be a real shame if ego got in the way of this opportunity.

National Post: Markham needs to produce more research on NHL-ready arena. Despite the need for transparency these types of deals have a way of keeping the details private, despite the need for public funds.

Monday Papers

Monday, February 4th Jets and NHL news

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets’ mojo goes missing. In a condensed season, it really is quite amazing how quickly your fortunes can change. A week ago the Jets were about to embark on another road trip and could do no wrong. One week and three losses later they are a broken team who cannot do anything right. One can only wonder what next week will bring.

Winnipeg Free Press: Who’s hot, who’s not. Enstrom on the hot list while Pavelec is on the cool list.

Winnipeg Sun: Back to basics. The highs and lows of hockey team fandom is quite significant. When the team is winning, fans talk playoffs. When they lose it is high 1st round draft picks and need to trade the entire team. This past week it was probably a good thing if the Jets stayed off the internet. After taking a day off Saturday, the majority of the team (except Buff, Ladd, Little and Redmond) were back on the ice for a long skate, as coach Noel and his staff worked on getting the team back to basics.

Winnipeg Sun: No conspiracy behind Dustin Byfuglien’s mystery tweak, says Jets coach Claude Noel. Fact and fiction often get blurred when it comes to hockey in this town. A rumour, repeated enough, somehow makes its way all the way to the coach’s press conference and was quickly dismissed. Now the conspiracy theorists out there will likely not accept this denial but who needs facts, when you have innuendo and conjecture. End of the article contains an amusing chat with Alexander Burmistrov who tried a sneak attack in Tampa and may try it again he says.

Illegal Curve: Coach Noel presser. Talking about player updates. Buff rumours addressed. Making changes. Penalty Kill talk. Team confidence level. Helping team by looking forward. His reaction to the losses. Negativity in situation. Trying to keep a balance. When adversity strikes. Play of Kris Versteeg against the Jets. Updates on Miettinen and Bogosian.

Illegal Curve: Players audio. Following some serious road woes, the Jets took a day off on Saturday and got back to work Sunday on the ice at the MTS Centre. Scrums with Blake Wheeler and Ondrej Pavelec. 1 on 1′s with Chris Thorburn and Paul Postma.

Jets affiliate and prospect news:

St. John’s official site: IceCaps re-assign Cody Sol to Colorado. The big man was unable to stay in the IceCaps lineup and will re-join the Eagles. He has already played 21 games in the ECHL this season.

Winnipeg Free Press: What’s not to like about Lowry. He has been dominant in the WHL for the Swift Current Bronocs. The son of former NHLer Dave Lowry, he is tearing up the competition this season.

Winnipeg Free Press: Checking in on the kids. A roundup of the prospects in the Jets system.

NHL news:

Globe and Mail: Once the league’s marquee rivalry, Ovi no longer a match for Sid. Looks like Jets fans were correct when they chanted “Crosby’s Better”. The Pens did Winnipeg a favour as they beat the Capitals on Sunday and kept Washington in the basement of the Southeast.

Vancouver Province: Luongo gets fourth straight start today against Oilers. Goalie controversy! What goalie controversy? Sure seems like the Canucks are playing their #1 netminder.

Globe and Mail: Canadiens beat Sens thanks to questionable call by referees. Goalies are becoming practically untouchable, similar to quarterbacks in the NFL. Slight contact outside of the crease is resulting in calls and nullification of goals.

Illegal Curve Hockey Show Replay:

Part 1: Winnipeg Jets vs. Tampa Bay Lightning Recap. Jets week in review. Interview with Chuck Gormley of CSNWashington.com. Jets week ahead. Time for changes to the Jets roster? Interview with Jesse Rogers of ESPNChicago.com.

Part 2: Interview with Sean Fitz-Gerald of the National Post. PK Subban re-signs with the Montreal Canadiens. Response to Randy Turner’s article in the Winnipeg Free Press “Parents who can afford it scramble to get kids into elite hockey programs”. NHL News & Notes. Rapid Fire, Cheers & Jeers.

Tuesday Papers

Tuesday, February 5th Jets and NHL news

Note: Stay tuned to IC for all the post-game audio from coach Noel, the Jets/Panthers dressing rooms and our post-game podcast from the pressbox.

Note II: Be sure to stay tuned to @illegalcurve as we will be bringing you all the latest from the MTS Centre as the Panthers visit the Jets. During the game you can win IC Gear by participating in our twitter 50/50 and Game Winning Goal contests. Remember that for your vote to qualify you must send in your guess by hashtaging (#) our 50/50 contest or the Game Winning Goal (GWG) contest. (i.e. #IC5050 $42,375 or #ICGWG Kane.)

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Time for Jets to take care of business. The key for the Jets was taking advantage of the down time during this ‘break’ in the schedule and using that as an opportunity to work on fundamentals. If the team can turn things around it will start tonight against Florida.

Winnipeg Free Press: Struggling club can’t wait to be re-Buffed. For all the naysayers, all one needs to do is point to this team with Buff and at this team without Buff and you can see the difference.

Winnipeg Sun: Jets need to find on-off switch fast. And once they find it they had best leave it on. The team cannot afford to take any time off. Whether it is dumb penalties or lazy shifts, coach Noel is going to have to have this team hit another gear tonight against the Panthers. Another loss, to a division rival no less, is simply unacceptable.

Winnipeg Sun: Zach Redmond fitting in on blue-line. He has earned some praise from his coach, which for a rookie defenceman is always a nice touch. His offensive ability is starting to become more evident as he gets more comfortable adjusting to the speed of the NHL game.

Winnipeg Sun: Chris Thorburn laments penalty problems. He and Jim Slater have been entrusted by coach Noel to start a number of the penalty kills this season. They have not gone as well as hoped obviously.

Winnipeg Sun: Without Byfuglien for third game. For all those who malign his game, just look at what this team is like during his absence. Now one player does not make an entire team, but they don’t call him Big Buff for nothing. His impact is huge as is his absence. Of course coach Noel won’t allow the team to use this as an excuse so it will be up to Stuart and Hainsey as the senior rear guards to step up and guide Postma, Redmond and Clitsome along.

TSN: Power Rankings. Jets fell from 9th to 26th but that is what three road losses will do.

National Post: Looking to improve discipline after sloppy road trip. The question on everyone’s mind has to be which Jets team will show up tonight at the MTS Centre?

Winnipeg Jets official site: True North Foundation unveils Project 11. This is part of Hockey Talks Initiatives”Hockey Talks” which will provide education to youth in Manitoba with a focus on positive mental health awareness.

Jets opponent (Florida Panthers) news:

Miami Herald: Kris Versteeg hopes success vs. Winnipeg Jets continues. His mystique as a Jets killer continues to gain momentum and the Jets will hope to halt this tonight as the MTS Centre crowd welcomes him to Winnipeg.

Florida Sun-Sentinel: Enforcer George Parros adds punch to lineup. He brings a big, physical presence to the Florida lineup.

NHL news:

NHL.com: Selanne’s record season saw hockey boom in Finland. Always worth reading about the Finnish Flash.

CBC: Vancouver wins season-high 3rd straight game. Good thing Luongo doesn’t keep winning….oh wait.

Toronto Sun: NBPA eyeing NHLPA’s Donald Fehr? Not many NHL fans would be too upset to see him leave for the NBA. And you can bet that outgoing commish David Stern would be happy his tenure ends next season if Fehr did indeed switch leagues.

Wednesday Papers

Wednesday, February 5th Jets and NHL news

Note: Tune into the first ever episode of NHL Mid-Week with Illegal Curve Hockey tonight on TSN Radio 1290 from 6 pm to 8 pm. Guests: Kelly Hrudey (CBC), Norm Maciver (Chicago Blackhawks Assistant GM).

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Snapped streak big in short season. As crazy as it sounds the Jets could not afford to lose last night’s game. Based on the stretch of games they have upcoming, taking 2 points was critical.

Winnipeg Free Press: Spotlight on Alexander Burmistrov. After handling his assignment to the IceCaps it was hoped the AHL seasoning would help to improve his game. Coach Noel rewarded him with a move to the team’s 2nd line on Tuesday. A look at his game, the things they liked, they didn’t like and a synopsis by Ed Tait.

Winnipeg Sun: Penalty kill comes through for Jets. Even more key than the play of the Jets during the penalty kill was te fact that Winnipeg only took 2 penalties the entire game. After giving up 5 opportunities in Tampa, 6 against Florida and 5 versus the Canadiens it was nice to see some discipline return to the Jets last night. Some other thoughts from Friesen included Blueline bounty, rookie race and a healing Bogosian.

Winnipeg Sun: Turning boos into cheers. Fans are not sitting in the MTS Centre blindly applauding this team, especially when the effort is seen as less than stellar. During the power play the Jets just seemed to be unable to get anything going and fans reacted accordingly. Of course when Bryan Little scored during the 4 on 3 in OT, it is not a surprise that the fans quickly switched to cheer mode.

CBC: Burmistrov gets chance to prove his worth. He has talent to spare but has yet to turn that potential into something tangible in any significant fashion.

TSN: Tarasov scores twice, including winner as Sharks top IceCaps. And just like that the two game winning streak is over for the Jets farm club.

Jets on a Deadline – Winnipeg 3 Florida 2 in OT:

Winnipeg Jets: Ondrej Pavelec, Bryan Little and Blake Wheeler.

Florida Panthers: Jonathan Huberdeau and coach Kevin Dineen.

Coach Noel Presser: Coach Noel broke down the Jets OT win over the Panthers.

Illegal Curve Post-game podcast from the Press box: Host Drew Mindell and Analyst Richard Pollock break down the Jets play against the Panthers.

Jets on a Deadline: All the recaps, audio, video and 3 starts from the Jets game.

NHL news:

KTAR – The Voice of Arizona: Glendale mayor says Phoenix Coyotes can stay if price is right. Translation whomever is going to be the next owner of this club, will not receive the sweetheart deal that Greg Jamison had arranged with the previous city council in Glendale.

Globe and Mail: Gimmick no more, teams finally taking shootout seriously. With points at such a premium, especially during a shortened season, teams are rightly seeing this as an important opportunity to gain an advantage over their competition.

Globe and Mail: Austria’s surprising gift to the world of hockey. His name is Vanek. Thomas Vanek. And he is your current NHL points leader.

TSN: Is the NHL going to the 2014 Games in Sochi? As someone who loves seeing the NHL participate in the Olympics, I really hope we see the players head to Russia to take part in the games.

CBC: Elliotte Friedman’s 30 Thoughts. Always worth a read to help keep abreast of what is happening around the rest of the NHL.

Thursday, February 6th Jets and NHL news

Note: Stay tuned to IC for all the post-game audio from coach Noel, the Jets/Leafs dressing rooms and our post-game podcast from the pressbox.

Note II: Stick to @illegalcurve as we will be bringing you all the latest from the MTS Centre as the Leafs visit the Jets. During the game you can win IC Gear by participating in our twitter 50/50 and Game Winning Goal contests. Remember that for your vote to qualify you must send in your guess by hashtaging (#) our 50/50 contest or the Game Winning Goal (GWG) contest. (i.e. #IC5050 $39,650 or #ICGWG Ladd.)

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Olympic dreams. The games might not start until 2014 but in Canada, like a Presidential election in the US, talk begins well before the start date. The dressing room teams with a veritable fortune of potential players for a number of squads including Canada, United States, Finland, Sweden and the Czech Republic.

Winnipeg Free Press: From hockey sticks to carrot sticks. His kingdom for a Whole Foods. Geoff Kirbyson takes an inside look at what Jim Slater does in terms of diet.

Globe and Mail: Pushing to rebuild on the fly. Despite fans saying they are happy to build towards the future nobody wants to watch a losing team. Again, some may say that as long as the effort is there in a loss, then it is fine but I would suggest that this is a sentiment held by the minority. Echoing that, coach Noel cannot be worried about long term goals, as a coach’s life often depends on winning now. Not many coach’s will suggest that it is fine to lose now because they are working towards future goals. Even a GM has to be careful in the words he uses to not send a fan base over the edge. When fans pay some of the highest prices in the NHL to watch NHL calibre hockey, they won’t be pleased being sold sub-par teams, just to watch NHL hockey.

Winnipeg Sun: Zach Bogosian could be back soon. The prospect of both Bogosian and Byfuglien returning to the roster must have Jets fans thanking a higher power. While they young guns on the blue line (Redmond, Postma) have filled in admirably, it has been a trial by fire and while they have been tested and not broken, it will be much better for Winnipeg when Bogo and Buff return.

Winnipeg Sun: Mark Scheifele had too much working against him says Hawerchuk. The Jets 1.0 former first round pick continues to show faith in the Jets 2.0 current first round selection. As Paul lays out there were a number of factors working against Mark Scheifele but had his performance dictated that he should stay he might be in tonight’s game against the Leafs. Instead he was sent back to the OHL to continue to work on the areas that need further development.

Globe and Mail: Jets make right call in sending Scheifele back. Some fans are 100% convinced that given the opportunity to play on the 1st or 2nd line, Scheifele would have had success and there are others who are equally sure that the Jets made the right move sending him back to the OHL. Since nobody owns a crystal ball we will have to wait another year as he spends the rest of this season in junior hockey.

Illegal Curve: GM Kevin Cheveldayoff press conference. Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff met with the media Wednesday to discuss the reassignment of Mark Scheifele to the Barrie Colts of the OHL. Also spoke about Jets long term team goals, Zach Redmond, Alexander Burmistrov.

National Post: Blake Wheeler on Phil Kessel drought: ‘I don’t feel bad for him’. The two are former college roommates and briefly played together in Boston. Wheeler knows something about goal droughts as well as media scrutiny and you can bet he has empathy for his good friend’s situation. And while he might feel for his buddy I am sure he hopes he continues in this drought for one more game.

Jets affiliate and prospect news:

TSN: McCarthy’s pair helps Sharks blank IceCaps in chippy game. After sweeping the games this past weekend, St. John’s has been swept by the Sharks in the mid week back-to-back contests. Since you don’t get points for fighting (a total of 125 minutes last night), it makes for an interesting boxscore note but not nearly as much as the 2 points would have been to help these guys make a move in the Eastern conference.

USCHO: Even in a tough year for Michigan, Trouba finds ways to impress. A great read on the Jets 2012 first round selection as he continues to develop under the watchful eye of legendary Wolverines coach Red Berenson. While I haven’t had much of an opportunity to watch him play live I caught a bit of the Michigan/Michigan State contest and Trouba’s physicality and booming slap shot were immediately apparent.

Jets opponent (Toronto Maple Leafs) news:

National Post: Phil Kessel’s goal drought not all that bad for Maple Leafs. Basically suggesting that if the Leafs are in the mix and he is playing poorly, what might happen when he actually starts finding the back of the net.

Winnipeg Free Press: ‘Now…I’m the enemy’. Randy Carlyle is not considered an outsider. He may coach a team from another city but his history in Winnipeg runs too deep for him to be treated as ‘the enemy’.

Winnipeg Sun: Coach Randy Carlyle makes long-awaited return to Winnipeg to fact the Jets. While the MTS Centre crowd might be into booing the opposition I cannot help but think that the former #8 (Jets 1.0 of course) as well as long time coach and GM of the Manitoba Moose will receive a heartfelt roar of approval from the crowd. Of course they will then turn their ire to booing his team.

Toronto Sun: Depth duo on way back to Leafs. Toronto is grinding out a tough stretch of games right now and could use all the able bodies available to them.

NHL news:

CBC: Stars’ Jaromir Jagr sinks Oilers with OT winner. He continues to extend a record he already owns with his 17th OT goal. He also tied Luc Robitaille for 10th on the NHL’s all-time goal scoring list.

Vancouver Sun: Canucks’ Cory Schneider makes return to the nets. The goalie carousel continues to spin round and round.

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Defence line has been saving grace this season. Considering the injuries that this team is dealing with that is quite the statement.

Winnipeg Sun: Byfuglien won’t be back for game against Leafs. Good to read that he is back on the ice working with the Jets strength and conditioning coach.

Barrie Examiner: Scheifele’s dream rests in Winnipeg. Stick tap to reader Robert who pointed out this good read with the Barrie perspective on the return of Mark Scheifele.

Friday Papers

Friday, February 8th Jets and NHL news

Note: Tune into the Illegal Curve Hockey Show on TSN Radio 1290 as the guys discuss all the latest Winnipeg Jets and NHL news but with an earlier than normal time (7 am to 10 am) on Saturday due to the Jets game against the Senators which starts at 1 pm cst. Guests: James Gordon (Ottawa Citizen), Mike Colligan (The Hockey Writers – Pens).

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets let game slip away. The game was in their hands and they didn’t have the killer instinct to finish off the Leafs when they had the opportunity.

Winnipeg Free Press: Kitty’s paw waves off old times in Winnipeg. He seemed reluctant during the game to accept the acknowledgement but the MTS Centre crowd of 15,004 cheered him on during a break in the action.

Winnipeg Free Press: Spotlight on Paul Postma. Probably not a great day to have the spotlight on him. He made a critical error during the Jets power play that led to the shorthanded goal by Bozak.

Winnipeg Sun: Ponikarovsky’s penalty, power plays & more from the Jets-Leafs game. Terrible penalty to take. Especially after the team had given up the game tying goal. While the Jets got off to a decent start they were unable to convert. Power play was atrocious as the team could not generate any flow. As well as a few notes from Penton.

Winnipeg Free Press: Bogosian takes huge step forward. As do the fortunes of the Winnipeg Jets as soon as he steps back on the ice for this team.

CBC: Jets face blue line juggle. While offence from the backend is good as an addition to the forwards putting the puck in the net, that is simply not happening. For the fifth game in a row the Jets have scored under three goals.

National Post: Leafs or Jets – Who has the brighter future? After watching last night’s action which team would you prefer to cheer over the next couple of seasons?

For the Jets and NHL news click here.

Jets on a Deadline – Leafs 3 Jets 2:

Winnipeg Jets Scrums: Bryan Little, Grant Clitsome and Zach Redmond.

Toronto Maple Leafs Scrums: Coach Randy Carlyle, James Reimer, Phil Kessel, Matt Fratin and Tyler Bozak.

Illegal Curve Post-game podcast from the Press box: Guest Host Michael Remis and Analyst Richard Pollock break down the Jets play against the Panthers.

Jets on a Deadline: All the recaps, audio, video and 3 starts from the Jets game.

Saturday Papers

Saturday, February 9th Jets and NHL news

Note: Tune into the Illegal Curve Hockey Show on TSN Radio 1290 as the guys discuss all the latest Winnipeg Jets and NHL news but with an earlier than normal time (7 am to 10 am) today due to the Jets game against the Senators which starts at 1 pm cst. Guests: James Gordon (Ottawa Citizen), Mike Colligan (The Hockey Writers – Pens).

Note II: Stick to @illegalcurve as we will be bringing you all the latest from Scotiabank Place as the Jets visit the Senatos. During the game you can win IC Gear by participating in our twitter Game Winning Goal contest. Remember that for your vote to qualify you must send in your guess by hashtaging (#) the Game Winning Goal (GWG) contest. (i.e. #ICGWG Little.)

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Buff out again; Bogosian still a week away. Without a doubt the most curious injury to fell a Jet to date. Regardless of the origin Buff remains unavailable today. Good news it Bogosian is close.

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets expect Pavs to stay in sick bay, Montoya to start. Unfortunate for the Jets number one tender to be sick, but hopefully it will allow Montoya to shake off the lockout rust.

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets add a Little dash of changes. Coach Noel needed to do something to get his lines working again. Will this be the cure for what ails the team? Stay tuned!

Winnipeg Free Press: The PK is far from ok. Best way to avoid PK troubles……get Byfuglien and Bogosian healthy as soon as possible. While people might suggest this is simply making excuses, when you lose two of your biggest defensive studs from your lineup, they are not easily replaced as it evidenced by the Jets woeful penalty kill.

Winnipeg Sun: Redmond getting better, Thorburn talks roomies. He has steadily improved as he has played more and his confidence level matches his skills. Chris didn't think he would like losing his room mate on the road (Mark Stuart) but he is learning that there are some advantages.

Winnipeg Sun: Homecoming for Clitsome. Having at least 40 family and friends in the crowd cannot be cheap but sometimes you cannot put a price tag on this opportunity.

Winnipeg Sun: Top line reunited. Will this reunion special last? Coach Noel is looking to spark some offence so he is returning to his top line from last season.

Winnipeg Sun: Wheeler a minus – 9. The numbers across the board for the Jets are not good. Time to change it up as they have a very tough stretch of opponent upcoming.

Winnipeg Sun: Ladd bobblehead gets around NYC. Our boy Constantine (jetsxoxo) is again making waves, except this time he isn’t in a NHL lockout meeting. Instead he is taking Andrew Ladd (as a bobblehead) to the UN and to various other NY institutions.

Illegal Curve: Coach Noel scrum. Pavelec has flu like symptoms (did not look good). Not determined if Montoya will start tomorrow. Line juggling. Possibly going back to Ladd/Little/Wheeler. Status of Dustin Byfuglien (remains day to day, will not be in lineup against Senators). Talking plus/minus – is it problem of chemistry? Bothersome areas. Senators sans Spezza. Pavelec’s save percentage.

Jets prospect news:

Barrie Colts official site: Colts double up Whalers. In his first game action since being returned from the Jets, Scheifele gets a goal and assist in return.
