First thread I'm ever starting so bear with me if I messed it up.

EDIT: I guess I'll just post a link from the Isles

That was fast, they must be in love with his play. Good for him anyway, he has been very steady on the blueline in his short time and looks to be a very solid bottom pairing guy in the future.

They must be pretty confident about the guy. I would have waited 20 games or so.

Awesome. He's been so much better than expected. Lock this kid up early he's only going to get better with more playing time.

I agree, that was fast. Makes me think that the team had identified Strait as a target long before he was placed on waivers.

Its easier to tell with a Defensemen imo. Its not like he has put up a lot of points in a short period of time which could be attributed to luck. He plays within himself and never tries to do too much. I'm fine with signing him this early.

Did not see this coming at all.. I mean he has been pretty solid but it also has only been like six games.

I would have done the same thing. Also I would have given him a 2 year deal at most.

I also think that this will probably be for right around the league minimum but a 1-way deal. Similar to the one McDonald signed. Strait gets the security of a 1-way deal, team hopefully gets a good dman dirt chearp.

Congrats to Strait. This reminds me of the Andrew MacDonald contract. Isles gave MacDonald the security of a 4 yr deal, after only 40 or so nhl games and he signed on the cheap.

I thought the same thing, and man, I kinda feel bad for Mac. Maybe the best bargain in the league.

There was ZERO reason for us to sign this right now. Seems Very rushed. That does not mean it cant work out. why not wait untill he played a season ?

Because if he plays a season and does well he is going to want more money.

Most likely, the Isles are familiar with Strait, are convinced all he needed was a chance, and took the opportunity to sign him to a bargain deal.

And if it doesn't work out, he will be a #7 or 8 dman making very little money.

This is what I think it is too. Strait has been good, solid for us so far. He was highly thought of by Pittsburgh, but it was a numbers game. The Isles dangled the carrot of an NHL contract and he went for it. When the details come out of the $$$, I think we'll all be pleasantly surprised.

Besides, many have commented that Strait is AMac 2.0.

Good to see him locked up and at a steal, he has looked good at this level and in the AHL.

Not hating on it cause it could work out.. Just thought it could have waited.

3 year deal at $775K per, so its not exactly a risk. I'd say under a mill for a solid, NHL-quality defense man is a great bargain.

Strait obviously took the security of an NHL contract over the money just like AMac (and Frans) did. Great deal for the Isles, very little risk yet with good upside.

It's up to Strait to play well and get that big money contract at the end of this one now.

$775K is what you could pay a 7th defenseman. If he develops well he'll end up being a 3/4 who eats minutes and just plays smart defense. No gripes from me about this deal. Good help for cheap is hard to find.

Unless they are planning a trade in the very near future.
Maybe they want to make sure they are covered.
