Impending ufas Streit and Vis have a combined cap hit of $10.7m. If the isles are out of the race at the trade deadline and teams call for defense, why should the isles not look to trade both?

Past few months could mean January and February. Few is way to vague a phrase for the NHL to pursue Chiarelli.

From the TSN article

Quote:
The move puts the Islanders above the cap floor and the team can choose to toll the contract so they can keep using the cap hit in perpetuity if Thomas doesn't come back, or just let his contract expire at the end of the season.
Is this a loophole that nobody has considered yet?

Can you just sign a guy who is 35+ to a deal worth lets say $10M, have him not report, count his cap hit and not need to spend the salary (I am assuming you would have to offer this player some sort of perk, side payments?)

You could endlessly bump your cap floor number without ever needing to pay that amount...

I really hope Thomas shows up so the Islanders got to give Bruins the 2nd rounder which will be around 31-40 pick in the draft. Then Thomas says **** it and retires for good. That would be a nice way to say f u for capcircumventing .

NYI have the option of tolling the Thomas contract if he doesn't play this year. If they chose to toll Thomas still owes them a year of service with a 5 million cap hit and 3 million salary. Thomas is on record that he wants to play next year. If NYI tolls the contract and Thomas plays the Bruins get the second round pick.

I thought of this, but Bob said they can only toll for 1 more season. Not sure why though.

To all those complaining about circumvention: now you know how poor teams felt when the rich teams were circumventing the cap with front loaded retirement contracts. Taste of your own medicine, so to speak.

Was there ever a restriction that prevented GMs/Owners from talking to each other? I thought that they just couldn't talk to players...

I think there was a thing where they couldn't discuss trades, like 90% sure

Wow I hope the Islanders dont pull some bs like they did with Lubo or Nabby if he doesnt report. I would really like to see Thomas in the NHL again, but I doubt he goes through NYI first to do it...

It doesn't look like the isles will toll his contract.

#Isles are unlikely to toll Thomas' contract at this point. Want flexibility going into offseason with buyouts, etc.

#Isles GM Garth Snow: "This move gives us roster flexibility." 2nd-rounder is conditional on Tim Thomas playing at least 1 game for #Isles.

how was it "BS" and why wouldn't they? They're getting NHL players one way or another, if the players don't like it, they don't have the the choice to just not come to camp, when they sign a contract that doesn't have an NTC, they have to abide by it

They have young forwards to trade.
you guys need to stop looking at those "cap" sites. Most are flawed

I'm more amazed that this has been reported by eklund before anyone else than the trade it self

Ehh, it's dead money one way or the other. It's better to be dead on a cellar team...more guys get playoff wins, which is more money for the PA long-term.

What BS did we pull with Lubo? How dare we trade for a player who upgrades our team...

Nabby signed an extension here. I guess Snow got him drunk and made him sign...
