Didn't think there was anyway that his 5 million was going to be freed up this year. Thanks for the Cup, Thomas and thank you Islanders for making the Bruins players at the trade deadline. They might not do anything big...but at least they have the option to make a nice rental now.

Don't tell it to me. Other people are getting mad about NY being able to ice a worse team. I don't get it either.

the Islanders have to dress him, he can't just show up and play, if he just shows up he probably wouldn't be in game shape and would have to earn it first

Except they aren't spending $5,000,000; they're artificially lowering their cap floor by $5M

If he reports though Wang has to pay him.

Exactly. Isles get 5 million hit on paper without spending a dime.

Kind of like FL suspended 3 players, who like Bailey+ JJ, were injured during the lockout?

Bailey, one of the suspended players, expressed unhappiness when he didn't get a longterm contract during his last contract talks.

Like Tavares, someone should really tell the NYI he's unhappy in the organization.

Even sadder is seeing fans act like lemmings, without checking facts " omg, they did this to reach the cap floor. How long will the NHL allow cap circumvention"?

I did read that it was ok for GM's to talk during the lockout, it wasn't ok to talk to the players or their agents. I didn't say anything about "a few months", is it possible you were responding to the same poster I responded to?

LOL, a conditional second? That's hillarious, I was expecting like a conditional 7th...

Thank you for the cup and all you brought before it as well, but you left an ass hole. I'm willing to put the latter behind because we're done in 4 games to Montreal without you, but I wish he could have retired a Bruin, and have gone out actually playing.

So long. Islanders get a good deal, $5m cap hit and they don't have to pay him zip. I knew a deal like this would happen.

No sorry. The guy you quoted stated Chia had been talking to Isles for a few months. That wasn't what Chia actually said.

no they were injured due to playing overseas and we needed to fill thier spots so the only way was to suspend them....Stop reaching and do your homwork

It's the way of the future. By the end of this CBA financially weaker teams are going to be looking for these types of contracts. Guys like Kovalchuk, Luongo, Zetterberg, etc will be worth aquiring for their cap hits. You just have to pay them $1m in cash to keep their 5m+ cap hits running. Trade a bad $1m AHLer the other way and it the dollars paid out cancel, 5m cap hit for nothing. Things are going to start getting really fun in about 7/8 years.

You can't just fail someone because you tried to **** the system.
You're asking for a massive ****storm from the players union.

Trading him is not easy and ya .. You would still have to pay him.

I agree. Definitely going to get weird. Every action has an equal but opposite reaction. Cheat the cap ceiling by signing players with artificially low cap hits, and later you'll see teams cheat the cap floor by deals like this. It's a two way street.

Trade him? Sure then team x has to pay him assuming he reports.

Fail him on his physical is not plausible. There is nothing wrong with him. It would be a grievance at least and potential law suit. So, that's pretty far fetched in reality.

giving up a second draft pick for a player that won't actually play and has the sole purpose of making the Isles save money is really sad and pisses me off

Doubt the pick ever goes to Boston. Thomas currently has no intention of reporting to any team.

Is this a loophole that nobody has considered yet?

Can you just sign a guy who is 35+ to a deal worth lets say $10M, have him not report, count his cap hit and not need to spend the salary (I am assuming you would have to offer this player some sort of perk, side payments?)

You could endlessly bump your cap floor number without ever needing to pay that amount...
I'll gladly sign with the Isles for a 5 year 25 million dollar contract. If they want me to not report that's fine with me, just throw me 50 thousand dollars on the side, and I won't. Seems like a good idea to me

Once the lockout reached Christmas all the legit NHL reporters just decided to take the year off. This deal was actually done last week.

This needs to be read more^^^^
We all know there are teams that are struggling to make the cap floor and be profitable. This is their of coping. Hopefully, the Isles can turn it around be player in the playoffs again. And this is coming from a Flyers fan. This past CBA should have had that all new contacts now have to be Cap=salary for every year of the contract. Sign a 4 year deal worth 20 mill...then the cap and salary are both 5 mill per season. Have no variance. Seems so simple.

It's just so sad in that front office and even sadder that they're my favorite team. Please I beg of anyone to kidnap charles wang.
