It will all depend on which teams are in the hunt and which teams are out of it by the deadline. Last year's deadline saw very little movement with high demands from every team looking to sell because most of the teams were still in the hunt in early February. Supply drives demand when it's not something you can manipulate / create.

Honestly can't pinpoint realistic targets this early because no teams except for the Toronto Maple Leafs () have been kicked out of the hunt.

As I've been saying multiple times around this board, I have a feeling the player will be in the mold of a Brendan Morrow or Michael Ryder (or a player to erase / ease any questions about the third line left wing).

The only thing that this team has to do now is get healthy and stay that way and score some freaking goals for now I know I know , they are still winning.

"Matters": because it's a level of finality to the Thomas/Bruins relationship that many have talked about for months & months (and months and months, ad nauseam). No more will people have to talk about it, or question the "what if?" about this whole debacle.

"Exciting": because it's a salary break that most people thought wasn't going to materialize. The Savard LTIR $ was always going to be there, but most people thought that there was no way that (unless they included a major asset in the trade) the B's would be able to free up the Thomas $ ... and they did.

Opes up more cap space this season. We have over 7 million in cap room now. We can basically take on any contract we want via trade and not have to send a bunch of money back, something that is very convenient for teams looking to sell near the deadline.

This was an excellent move by Chiarelli. He must have his eyes on a few rentals.

Nope- the way this team pulls talent in the second round it's a big deal.

Koko, Knight, Lucic, Bergeron, Krejci in the last 9 years!

only half kidding

I'm curious about what the consensus is among Bruins fans, do you think Tim Thomas understood that he was probably punching his own ticket out of Boston by sitting out the year? Or was he always expecting to have the freedom to do his own thing and wind up back in the nets again in 2014? I like that Chiarelli acted decisively and unsentimentally with this move, shows a lot of strength and pragmatism without being held hostage by a star doing something 'odd'.

that said, I love the guy and will never forget everything he did for the Boston Bruins. Good luck with everything TT!

He probably will play considering he wants to play in the Olympics...he can't showcase his current ability sitting on the couch.
Knight...I'm not calling you out in anyway, I like you alot as a poster.

But it's still ridiculous to me that people(and it's not just you, many many maaannyy people) start with Tim Thomas the politician and then work their way to the athlete when talking about him.

I don't agree with the guy in my avatar on much politically I would bet, but that's the last thing I think of when picking athletes because I do agree with how he plays the game, and how he decides to communicate sign language to the deaf Habs fans

If Chiarelli is a true genius, he made this deal after getting a guarantee from Thomas (as much of a guarantee as you can get from that lunatic) that he's gonna play again next year... knowing he'll get a top 10 2nd round pick out of this.

Isn't it just a foregone conclusion Thomas comes back next year anyway? And assuming Thomas is still pretty good, the Islanders might start making some real moves up the standings.

If he doesn't report to the Islanders or any other team that acquires his rights via trade. Bruins get nothing other than cap space in return.

If the Islanders do not trade or keep him next year and him becomes a UFA Bruins get nothing,

Its hard to see the Isles just letting him walk. But I guess the might have to let him become a UFA to keep their second rounder.

I think he has value if they toll the contract. Not sure if they automatically cough the pick up or if it'll become the 2015 one once he reports.

I think Thomas knew he had played his last game as a Bruin when he said he wouldn't play this year. His no trade ended last summer and it was pretty obvious that the Bruins were penciling Rask in as their future starter.

At first the general consensus was that Thomas had an ax to grind with the Bruins but that does not appear to be the case and he just made an unusual decision to take the year off. Thankful we had Thomas obviously and what he accomplished for the team. As a Bruins fan I am happy with this move. Chia is a bad ass.

They pretty much just got rid of him. That's how I see it. Matters cause... He played for the B's for a number of years. Helped the team win the Cup. I guess that matters..

And I wouldn't doubt if you suit up for a game to get us a 2nd rounder.

Eat crow haters

TT's Mom posts here?

Thomas didn't retire so he had options.

He is not going to suit up for the Isles just to get the B's a pick.

He did not do Boston any "favors".

This past year was all about one thing, and one thing only...Tim Thomas.

He was a very good goalie who had a great run and helped deliver a Cup. For that I am grateful, but please don't pretend he's a saint or a role model, because I'm not buying.
