Da'Quan Bowers was arrested at LaGuardia Airport today with a loaded gun in his carry-on. Uh, he honestly thought he could bring a not only a gun, but a loaded gun, through airport security and onto his flight and no one would figure out what he was doing? NFL players are so stupid.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Peppers' deal to be extended/restructured.
I'm not sure he would be willing to, nor would the Bears. He's still got 3 years left, and given his age, just how long are we planning on extending him? And how much would we need to pay him so its WORTH HIS WHILE to sign an extension so he doesn't lose out on guaranteed money?
Tillman seems like the better bet for an extension that could save cap dollars.
I'd like to see us give the Non-Exclusive tag for Henry Melton. It means we pay him 120% of his salary last year ($565k x 120% = $678k), if another team signs him to an offer sheet, we get to match, and if we choose not to, we get 2 first round picks. That seems like a hell of a deal.
The only risk is...Melton may decide not to sign the tag, and hold out the entire year, which means that he and the Bears both get nothing.
Really hope Emery can iron out a long term deal with Melton and avoid any potential tag fiasco. Melton is only going to get better.
I agree. If we can work our a deal around $5M per year, I'd be thrilled. No way do I think he's worth $8M per yet, but at $5M per, cap hit wise, I think that's fair and I like keeping him around.

5 would be fantastic. Not sure how much Melton is looking for, but that would be golden.

Given his comments (he thinks hes the best DT in the NFL) probably a bit more than $5M per. But he's a 4-3 DT, and there aren't a ton of 4-3 teams out there, so his market isn't huge.
I don't see any chance Melton signs for less than 7 million a year
Unfortunately, I agree with you. I think odds are that is about as cheap as he will sign for. Maybe they can do a creative deal to lower the cap hit a bit, but $7M is probably the best we can do there. Hopefully they surprise us.
Hey may THINK he is, but he has only had one productive season on record. He hasn't established himself as one of the premier DTs quite yet. This is seems a lot like Joe Flacco demanding to be the top paid QB after one Superbowl run where his team did as much to win it as he did himself.
He can ask, he may not receive. Let me put it differently: The Bears won't be paying him $10M per. Let's just hope we do it in a way where we get some draft picks back for him (non-exclusive tag if we have to).

He has had 2 productive seasons at DT
And according to experts around league he was one of the premier DT"s last season

As a pass rusher, he had two productive years, but as a run-stopper, only last year did he really take a step forward. His tackles doubled from 2011 to 2012 season.
Not arguing that. But he really didn't "break through" until last season, where he hit in all categories. Does that warrant a Top 5 DT salary? Not in my books. Top 10-20, perhaps.
he will get paid for what we think he will do in the future, not what he did in the past. Do you think he will be a Top5 DT during his contract? I would reach a bit and say yes, for sure
