Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss has passed away

Jerry Buss in hospital battling cancer; surrounded by family and friends in his 'final days'

Quote:
Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss is dying of cancer and is currently surrounded by family and friends at his hospital bedside,RadarOnline.com is exclusively reporting.
The businessman and billionaire is at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and a source close to the situation tellsRadarOnline.com that Lakers players have been calling with well-wishes and even stopping by to see him in what they expect to be his final days.
“Jerry isn’t doing well and it’s quite sad, but he’s surrounded by loved ones,”

Quote:
Jerry Buss dies at 80; Lakers owner brought 'Showtime' success to L.A.

When Jerry Buss bought the Lakers in 1979, he wanted to build a championship team. He also wanted to put on a show.

The new owner gave courtside seats to movie stars. He hired pretty women to dance during timeouts. He spent freely on big stars and encouraged a fast-paced, exuberant style of play.

As the Lakers sprinted to one NBA title after another, Buss cut an audacious figure in the stands, an aging playboy in bluejeans, often with a younger woman by his side.

"I really tried to create a Laker image, a distinct identity," he once said. "I think we've been successful. I mean, the Lakers are pretty damn Hollywood."

Buss, 80, died Monday of complications of cancer at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Lakers fans will remember Buss for bringing extraordinary success — 10 championships in three-plus decades — but equally important to his legacy was a sense of showmanship that transformed pro basketball from sport to spectacle.

What's there to say? He's a legend and it's sad that he's dying but there isn't much to discuss. His health problems have been talked about for a while now and everyone knew eventually this day would come.

I brought it up in the Regular Season thread and even then I felt weird posting about it. I'm not really sure what to say.

[quoteo]Agree RT @BonnieBernstein: Jerry Buss wasn't just greatest owner in NBA history. He was, arguably, greatest owner in history of pro sports[/quote]

Today is a very sad day with a dark cloud over Los Angeles and the Laker Nation.

You will be missed and thank you for your service to Los Angeles and to the game of basketball.

RIP Legend.

RIP - obviously he was on another level of owners in pro sports. Lakers have been on a whole nother level for a long time. Will be interesting to see what happens from here on out. Hate the Lakers, I hope they fail.

RIP to a legend

Who was better, Steinbrenner or Buss? Interestingly enough, the sons that took over get highly criticized.

RIP Buss

As much as I hate the Lakers, Buss was a charismatic man who wanted what's best for his club

Horrible that, after building two separate dynasties, the final iteration of the Lakers he had to see was the current gong show.

RIP. Every fan of any team anywhere can only hope to have an owner with both the business sense and the passion for winning.

Easily one of the best owners. Managed to not only create one amazing dynasty, but two under his ownership. Many owners dream of just having that one. RIP

Magic was on Mike and Mike this morning. I didn't know how close he and Buss were. Magic was like a son to him apparently.

RIP
