I have zero problem with this. Great to see Erskine rewarded and knowing he will be on board for the next couple seasons.

seems a bit high for the coming Salary Cap drop, but I'd rather have him in the lineup than some of the other D fillers we have.

Nearly $2M a year for a 32 year old #6 defenseman who has trouble staying ahead of Jeff Schutlz on the depth chart. What could possibly go wrong?

Awful deal, McPhee. I realize the Caps need some bodies on defense next year, but this is not the price the Caps should be paying for Erskine with the salary cap coming down.

He would have got that and more as a UFA from some other team guaranteed. UFAs (for instance his replacement should we have let him walk) are the ones who get hyper inflated contracts. Joel Ward is an example.

I love Brandon Prust..but he is not a true enforcer and is a very very good 4th liner. He got 10 million over 4 years as a UFA. There are many many more examples of overpaid UFAs that have contracts FAR worse than this.

If you want a reasonable contract then you either keep your own, use a young player you drafted or give up assets in a trade for one.

It's absolutely terrible. There's no way Erskine was in a position to demand a ~33% raise.

More important, in the face of a clear need for more mobile defensemen, McPhee signed an immobile player who should be the #6-7 to a contract that suggests he should at least be an everyday player. It makes no sense.

GMGM probably got blueballs from having to wait almost half a year to overpay another role player in both money and term. Erskine playing on the 2nd pairing for a few games just happened to give him an excuse to blow his wad.

Not even 3 years ago they would rather trust Tyler Sloan than Erskine as an injury replacement against the Habs. Erskine was still the same player then.

Wrong. If he hit the UFA market there would be several teams in line for his services and he would have made north of $2 mil per for at least 1 more year.

Many seem to certainly underestimate him here. The guy is absolutely a legit heavy weight who can PLAY in this new NHL. Thats a pretty rare combo. He hits, fights, gives 100% and clears the crease.

Reminds me of 2 of my personal favorite Caps in Bob Rouse and Mark Tinordi. Limited skaters who gave 100%, hit everything in sight, had no hesitation to drop the gloves and competed with intensity.

You want to keep your mobile defensemen on the ice along with some others, then you need a John Erskine out there as well to keep the opponent honest. Matt Hendricks can only have his helmet pummeled so many times.

Ooof. It's like Brooks Laich all over again. They're in no man's land. Erskine isn't good enough to be a regular #4, but is a decent #6 plus heavy. Just like Laich isn't a 2C or, in my book, a quality 2LW. Spend the extra bucks and get a true #4. Don't try to shoehorn the guy into a spot and pay him nearly full price.

Did I say I wanted Erskine off the team?

I want him on the team, in the role he's suited for, which is the #7.

And Erskine's presence prevented Green from getting injured how?

Can't really comment one way or the other about Erskine until I see how the rest of the D is constructed for next year. Then I'll decide whether it's a waste or a good move. Definitely better than Schultz though.

Erskine has been okay. Just weird how one coach virtually saw no value and another has him playing top 4 minutes. I hope his shoulder holds out for the long haul though.

Alzner-Green/new RD
LD-Carlson
Erskine-Orlov

I can deal with that defensive group. Trade Kundratek+ to get a real LD for the top-4.

BB liked Erskine and Hanlon used him too. For some reason Hunter didn't like him.

But then again..Hunter absolutely LOVED him some Dennis Wideman and put Keith Aucoin on PP1 over Semin.

Erskine is moving on up. A modern day Bob Rouse class D man.

Hammer and Poti should be gone. Sarge, no way in hell.

Alzner Green | Erskine Carlson | Sarge Kundratek
Hillen

Erskine hasn't been the Caps' best Dman at all this year. In terms of chance differential he's been their worst, in fact (well, ahead of Hillen but he had like 3 shifts so I don't know if he should count). Caps get more shots for and fewer shots against when he's not on the ice.

Granted, he's used in moderately tough minutes so I won't say he's been their worst or anything, and I like the other aspects of his game. But no, he hasn't been their best Dman this season.

Matt Carkner got 3 years x $1.5M.
Cory Sarich got 2 years x $2M.
Shane O'Brien got 3 years x $2M.

And those were in a $70M salary cap. I don't see how Erskine was going to command more than what we gave him in free agency. McPhee paid full market price for him.

Just another patented GMGM "good soldier" contract. I can live with it if it means Schultz is gone.
