My only real disdain for Robi comes from the fact that he is the reason our d is getting log jammed and Larsen is getting scratched. If we could just dump Robi for a 3rd and plug Larsen into his spot our d-corps gets instantly better.
I don't even care for a 3rd. Get back 1 season of a #7 dman, leave Benn in Austin to get more experience.
This is absurd. Larsen was the best defenseman last game. How do you play Robidas and Goligoski over Larsen? I'd love to know what Larsen has to do in order to earn a full time roster spot. How much worse does Robidas have to get before the coaching staff decides to finally scratch him?
lol Gully Logic.

I don't like Robidas as much as the next guy, but it's not exactly true that he's log jamming the d. Robidas isn't preventing two rookies are playing every night.
The thing that hurt Larsen more than anything else is Dillon playing at the amazingly high level he is for a rookie and Oleksiak developing faster than expected to make the NHL so soon. Larsen got screwed by those two young d-men improving so quickly to move past him on the depth chart.
Before the season started, I expected Larsen to be an every game player and Dillon being the rookie who bounces in and out of the lineup as many rookies do. In a completely pleasant surprise, Dillon grabbed a starting spot because of his play.

No, but Robidas is our oldest defender and to me our weakest link. He plays a game that is fairly similar to Larsens and I believe that the reason Gully is constantly scratching Larsen is because he doesn't want both him and Robidas in the line up together.

Gulutzan doesn't want to play more than three "small" defenseman. That means one of Robidas, Goligoski, Daley, and Larsen has to sit out. Daley and Larsen have been better than Robidas and Goligoski. Robidas and Goligoski should be the ones rotating in and out of the line up, not Larsen.

Your point is still valid, but one rookie was likely going to be an every day defender coming into the season, and a majority of people expected that to be Dillon. Fistric's trade made that official. Oleksiak for sure is a surprise though, and all but 1 scratch to Larsen has come with him in the lineup.
I don't agree that Larsen isn't playing because no coach would play 3 young defenders. IMO, Gully doesn't want to play 4 small defenders, and that's something Heika has mentioned as well. Of the small guys, the only one I want to see moved is Robi.

Exactly.
Coaches plan: a) Win games = sitting Robidas/Goligoski, b) Develop prospects = sitting Robidas/Goligoski. If there is a scenario C that doesn't lead to one of them sitting, please let me know.
I get that they dont want to play more than 3 small D, BUT WHAT ABOUT LAST SEASON? Daley, Robidas, Goligoski, and Larsen playing is not new or different.

I think they looked at the results of that season and have wisely decided not to repeat what doesn't work.
Do you feel better about the D this year or last year?
I say yes. I'd still prefer to see Larsen in over Robidas, but I think Dallas is better with Dillon and Oleksiak over Souray and Fistric (the two they ended the season with). I don't think Rome is bad ... I think Larsen is better .... and I think they are weaker with Rome who can't really move the puck all that well than Larsen who excels at moving the puck. It's almost a wash as the two rookies develop and get better, but by the end of the year I think they'll be hands down a better overall group than the 2011-12 D.
If you throw Grossmann in the mix .. yeah I'd still like to see him in Dallas if you're ignoring salary and upcoming prospects, and he's probably still an upgrade over the current versions of Dillion (honestly it's arguable) and Oleksiak. The right move was to not pay him $3.5 million, and to trade him for the package they received. I only bring him up because he was a part of the D for most of the year.

I feel much better about the defense and especially the potential of this defense over last season. The play has been better back there. The extra size helps a lot.
