Have you guys ever thought about the fact that Shero might use Engelland as trade bait given how well Despres and Bortuzzo have played and the fact that he won't want to change his top 4?

Some teams might be intrigued by his cap-hit as well...

Although we have lots of cap-space, he's basically replaced by Bortuzzo.

Engelland + Kennedy for a decent winger who's struggling?

Those guys aren't going to bring us back a decent winger

I think he wants $5m or $5.25m per year and the Avs are offering somewhere around $2m per.

Based on what we paid Staal at the time, with the cap going up, his demand isn't that bad if you can sign him for 5 years or so. He's a hell of a player.
Who's scored a career high of 18g, 55 pts. I wouldn't pay him 5m this year for that production. Yes you project that he'll continue to build on that... but I wouldn't do that in the short term. More realistically, ~3.5-4.5 over 2-3 years.

Penguins will not move Engelland, Harrington, or Letang unless it is big time overpayment.

I don't know why we're trading Dmen without getting one back (or in another trade). We've got exactly 7 NHL defensemen I'm comfortable playing even one second in the playoffs, and two of them are rookies.

Man, somehow I always thought Antero Niittymaki had better English than this.

Content: Engelland is certainly not untouchable, UNLESS the Pens get a good offer for Orpik. That's really the only point in which you absolutely need to keep him on the roster. Otherwise, like anyone else not named Letang, Crosby or Malkin, you listen to offers.

And how did that work out? Sutter isn't Staal. He can't be moved up to a 2c or a 2w. He just doesn't have the offensive upside for it. It makes about as much sense as putting Kennedy there.

I think we would get one back in another trade if we trade a roster d-man.

Actually I think we could do it in a pinch (and I think he'd be better than Kennedy because he's a smarter player than Kennedy and is pretty quick on his skates generally speaking), but only in an injury situation. Jeffrey makes that scenario possible as he'd be just fine at 3C.

Engelland isn't untouchable, no. But we're not so tough right now as a whole, it would be really hard to see Engelland go. We're smallish and we're not tough anymore.

We haven't even gotten out of Round 1 in a while, so we don't know what it feels like to get ousted by a team that grinds us down into submission, but I suspect a team like Boston would do just that in the second or third round.

Stewart and Clutterbuck fixes that. One can dream.

Is Chris Neil of Ottawa For Sale? [EDIT: Then again. I don't think we want him on the team]

If we can't get Clutterbuck, I see Chris Neil as a similar player. Of course Neil is a lot older, but he would definitely add some physicallity to the team.

I think we can close this thread. Clearly, the Matt Cooke top-six winger era has begun. It's here to stay. Problem solved.

Shoot. Me. Now.

Patience. Malkin still lines up next to an elite winger each shift.

I don't like Neil, but him in a Pens jersey would change that. ALthough i rather get Clutterbuck, but imagine Neil and Cooke on this team? We would be so hated just for the name value alone.

Sadly he's a huge upgrade over Boychuk. I'm just glad I won't have to hear Boychuk fan boys praise him for anything.

Did you seek him take that drink of water? Flawless. Did you see him walk to the locker room during the intermission? Graceful.

Beau Bennett is getting his shot soon, imo. Possibly even as soon as Friday. He was in Pittsburgh today to get evaluated by doctors.

I bet, health permitting, he plays by this weekend.

Neal is an elite sniper.

I don't want to get into a ******* contest over what elite means, but the thing that earns Neal that distinction is his shot and nothing else. Aside from that, what does he do better than Kunitz? Defense? Beat a guy one on one? Passing? Physical play/board battles?

All it would take is two 'overpayments'-- this being one of them-- and the Pens top six would be set.

Side note: I always wonder about the phrase 'overpayment'. Do we evaluate whether we win trades for wingers like were doing the hockey version of sabremetrics, or do we evaluate them on the grounds of, say, sitting Sid and Geno up until their 30th birthdays? Just asking . . .

Shero seems pretty open to the idea, if noncommittal:

If the injury's alright, I think he goes.

Always exciting to see the young top end talent get a shot. Personally, I think this team benefits from/maybe feeds a little off of the youthful enthusiasm.

Plus, on another level, I think Shero needs to know how much help he's going to need for the top six when the playoffs come.
