It was also the first right seed to ever win the Cup. Not exactly the norm.

It's also worth noting that if they're a bad OT team that would be troublesome in the playoffs where there's continuous OT.
It's worth noting that 2 of the 3 OT losses were reached by coming down from behind in regulation to reach OT. "Resiliency" is the coach's favorite word - obviously the team would like to not have to face adversity to begin with, but they've been able to get points out of games where they went down early and had to adjust on the fly.

Also worth noting that 2 of 3 losses in OT were due to taking unnecessary penalties and coughing up some ugly goals on the PK. Since then, though, the PK has gone 19-for-19. Now it's just the discipline that needs to be worked on

The 3rd OT loss was a 1-0 lead over the Bruins that was equalized in the dwindling minutes by a puck deflecting off of a defender's stick. Then went 6 rounds deep into the shootout.

Each OT loss exposed an area that the Devils needed to work on, and they came back and fixed most of those problems in the most recent set of wins.

While I'm not the biggest fan of 3 point games, I think the 3 OT losses can be looked into deeper than just a "loser point" inflating their record.

There are no shootouts in the playoffs!

Devils vs Penguins this weekend with back to back games for the first in the Atlantic and first in the East. Most pundits and even The Hockey News had them pegged being a lot worse than this. Is this just the early season surprise or for real?
Yes, the team that went to the SCF last year is an underdog.

Only here.

Yes they lost Parise, but it doesn't mean the team is gone to crap. In a 48 game schedule, Brodeur could be as potent as ever at his age.

The only surprising thing this season is how crappy the Capitals have been.

I'm hoping for a split against the Penguins this weekend. They've been the toughest atlantic team for the Devils this and last year.

That's not what he said. Pens handed the Devils their only regulation loss.

Not a rangers fan, but your post sums it up so very well.

I used to hate the Devils in their heyday of dominance. Now they are one of the few teams I don't mind seeing win. Maybe age and maturity has changed me, but I see now that consistent excellence like that should be applauded and envied, not hated.

Pittsburgh playing Phoenix?

Anyways, it is too early to say who does what in Atlantic. These two matches can easily go sweep one side or another. And plenty of time for sweeped one to still take division.

Do the same for the rest of the NHL then

No Letang or Nisky. Big test for our D youngsters. Brooks and Martin will probably play 30 if the game is close. Would like to see Geno's Line step up ES. With Fayne and Henrique in this time, Devs should be better than last time around.

The Boston game was a disappointment in that we found out only Kovy could manage a SO goal in that crazy 5-8 round (I forget) debacle.

The win over Tampa was very good, I stand corrected on that.

The Pens are definitely the best competition the Devils have faced though, no denying that. There is no denying that today's game is the most important show of strength for the Devs to date.

Wouldn't doubt it. Devils every single year put one of the least sexiest teams on the ice and constantly show you don't need overpriced flashy forwards to win. All you need is good defense, goaltending, and F that are good at backchecking.

They constantly make the playoffs and beat high scoring teams in the playoffs because they play shutdown hockey.

Going off each teams build this year it should be like this:
1. Penguins
2. Rangers
3. Devils
4. Flyers
5. Islanders

I would say NJD/NYR flip flop all year. Maybe one could overtake Pittsburgh.

They got off to a good start. Good for them. They'll cool off and drop to 6-8 heading into the playoffs.

I'm in the exact same boat. Have to give credit where it's due.
