What does everyone think of Mark Fayne and his future potential? Can he be a top 4 Defenseman? Will he be an NHL regular?
He played over 20 minutes in ice time tonight, and I thought he played a solid game, even getting some PP time.
Considering that last year he was in college his progression has been extremely pleasing.
He skates well, has great size, seems strong in front of the next, has nice shot amd if he continues to develop he could be a decent middle pairing defensemen. I like what we've seen so far.
How did Fayne even get called up or whatever? Was he in Albany? Did he even play a game for them?
How did he get the call instead of any other prospect?
Urbom was up first if I remember correctly. He wasn't ready. Taormina stuck, but then got injured. OMG sucked something fierce so he was sent back down. Then Fayne got his chance and ran with it. Something like that...
I didn't make the comparison, but I think he-who-did was referring more to Mottau's "do everything well, do nothing great" style.
It's quite obvious he's a much better athlete than Mottau, but he'll never be dominant at either end. That's at least how I interpret the comparison.
Again, agreed. Fayne is a decent skater, decent stick skills, has a decent pass, a decent shot, all around decent player. I doubt he'll become a dominant D man, or even a full time middle pair D man (possible I guess, but not probable IMO). The Motts comparison is not a knock, it's a compliment.

Oh ok. Thanks.
Also cheers Jim. NHL.com didn't have his AHL stats so I was confused.
He has play 27 NHL games and 19 AHL games....IT is way to soon to tell.
Did anyone think Taormina would breakout last year in the AHL? Well there production in college wasn't that far off and Fayne is a far better defensive defensemen.
I not saying he is or will become anything, but I'm saying to put a ceiling on him right now isn't right.
This is a 6'3 -220 defensemen that can skate and shoot! With some progression and some expirience this could be a good player.
Since its late, I'll use an NHL11 example. Mottau was a 79 or so in NHL 11. Fayne has the possibility of reaching 82 or maybe even 83 based on what we've seen.
He's 1 yr out of college I can see him becoming a solid 4-5 but with a little luck I wouldn't be 100% shocked to see him become a solid #3 d-man a few yrs from now.
I think he will be better then some here think. We had all of our big time D prospects come up and play and no one came close to playing the way he has. Now i am not saying he is going to be a #1 Dman but i think he will be better then some think. Maybe White v2.0 that can skate and pass better. This kid is very smart which is why he will be really good, just watch him play he doesnt get caught to much for a rookie, he does a great job of reading a play, and seems to always know where to be on the ice at the right time. For a kid out of college that is impressive.

Even Fayne was bad early imo, particularly the Caps game where he looked like he just didn't belong. But his progression under Lemaire has been eye-opening, to the point where I wouldn't mind him being one of the top six next year.
I don't know how high he can go, like some have said he was just out of college. But he and Taormina have both been revelations this year.
I see him as a solid 3rd pairing d-men. The fact that he's a right handed shot makes him more valuable then Salmela, Fraser, OMG and all the other guys who are fighting for that last spot.
I like his game and knowing he can get better since he's coming straight from College is pretty impressive IMO.
