Alzner, McDonagh, Shattenkirk, Subban (we could have Subban!) are all looking like potential 10+ year guys. I'd say it was a pretty good draft to take D early.
It looks like 2013 is the date when teams are deciding to just give up on their 2007 picks if they haven't shown they're NHL regulars yet.
Subban was a 2nd and McDonagh (though very good) was traded as well...I said it was a bit tough in the 1st round, not horrible.
Petrecki was not going to get any better sitting in the press box. Sending Irwin down was not the solution. I'm sure DW put out feelers trying to gauge his worth and found nothing.
If 210 believes the Islanders are going to pick him up, and do, you have to believe DW knows this as well. They gave him a shot to play with the big boys to see how he looked. let him get in a couple more practices with them before waiving him and decided this was the right decision.
Maybe DW is giving Petrecki a chance to make an NHL team while he still has a chance. That will be noticed by other youngsters over time.
Thats how I feel as well. Much like Brian Burke did with Bryzgalov.

Throw Rafalski into the mix. Much closer to Boyle's progression although a lesser player. Potvin was an injury retirement. My guess on Boyle is 37 to 39. It has to do with size, closer to Rafalski. And Boyle is developing an injury history.
For others, the issue with Sharks drafting is that they still emphasize size in the late first (it isn't just dmen). The top picks generally combine skill, speed and size. Around pick #10, one of the three qualities falls off and GMs are faced with "Two out of three ain't bad". The problem is that DW values speed less than skill and size. The same is true for other GMs. The reality is that physical dmen (big guys) take longer to develop and the guys who are big early in their life don't necessarily have the work ethic to improve their game. They are good because they are big and have a large incentive to coast on their assets when making the NHL really means that they have to continue to work even with their initial advantage. It is also the time in their life when distractions can be a major issue. IMO, the Sharks have a hard time figuring which draftees will be most immune to distractions.
I took a look back at the Wisconsin championship team and the draftees thereon. It is pretty obvious that Pavelski was cream of the crop. Dowell, Burish, Skille, Earl, Gilbert, Drewiske and Elliot also made the NHL from that team. At draft time, the big guy (for a forward), Skille, was far and away the top rated (with likely the most natural skill) and is almost a complete bust. Gilbert was probably the next guy and has made out OK. But Pavelski and Elliot probably lead the pack for that team and their work ethic is self-evident.

Go a little beyond that and there are some very serviceable players. Simmonds, Galiardi, Spaling, Tyrell and Subban. And no, I usually don't like to go that far beyond. As I said, a lot of GMs buy into size first.
I really think Petrecki didn't get much of a chance here. Even if he was a 7D, he could've learned more about the game from veterans on this team just practicing with the likes of Blake, Boyle, etc. You can see what Blake did with Vlasic.
Petrecki has the physical tools. Just not much above the shoulders. If he had learned the trade from solid veterans and emulated their work habits, his career might be different.
I hope he clears but if McLaren didn't, I seriously doubt Petrecki will.
I'm confused... Why waive Petrecki when they just had to reassign Irwin?
Probably didn't want to postpone the inevitable. They already have 7 NHL defensemen not counting Irwin. Can't exactly leave Petrecki in the press-box all season.
