The Soviets definitely did shoot men who retreated against the officers' orders. I don't know if that scene actually happened, I think it did but may have been slightly exaggerated with the machine-gun.

Even if it is false, I don't think it was intended as propaganda, it's a well known fact deserters and retreating men without orders were shot, by all armies in the war. No war movie ever is 100% accurate.

There is nothing else in that movie you could legitimately believe was anti-Russian propaganda, the "baddies" in that movie are unquestionably the Germans, especially the part where he hangs the little boy.

Does an American at the start of Saving Private Ryan not get shot when he jumps out of the landing craft before it makes the shore?

Nonsense. There were no cases of mass human wave attacks in Stalingrad (the battle in the city itself was all grinding small-unit tactics, fighting house to house, and sometimes even floor to floor). There were no cases of groups of soldiers being sent into battle with only half of them armed. There were no cases of political officers massacring entire groups of their own men after a failed attack in order to ensure no survivors. They simply made it up.

The only reason to insert that scene was to deliberately spread a false notion of the Soviets as excessively cruel, to take advantage of sixty years of propaganda to that effect. I guess they figured that American audiences were too stupid to acknowledge the Soviets as anything other than mindless barbarians or something.

Where is your source for these assertive claims?

It is a well known fact at the start of the war the Russians did not have enough guns to arm all of their men, there was a battle involving large numbers of men in the proximity of that fountain, it is very famous. At one point in the battle of Stalingrad the Germans were hundreds of metres away from the river, the Russians sent thousands of men across the river in large waves.

The only questionable part is the killing of their own men, there is no proof whether it happened or didn't, why would the Soviets keep those cases in their archives?

Enjoyed with a great glass of Santa Margherita pinot grigio.
