Is our "1st" line really a 1st line by NHL standards?

It's really disheartning to see our "1st" line struggling day in day out. We have a 3rd line center at best playing with bonafide wingers. Bozak hardly creates any offensive opportunities. I'm not taking anything away from the guy, he is AMAZING defensively, especially at faceoffs this year. However, when it comes to creating an offensive opportunity for our bonafide wingers on the 1st line, JVR & Kessel, he is literally a train wreck.

Yeah, that line plays like a first line every so often but that's not going to cut it when YOUR 3RD LINE IS YOUR BEST LINE EVERY.SINGLE.NIGHT. That is not how good teams run. Your first line SHOULD be your biggest threat because that's where your top-end talent is at. Unfortunately, that is not the case for this team.

I don't like the idea of splitting Kadri-Frattin either, they seem to have AMAZING chemistry from junior, so they must be kept together. I don't want Kadri centering the first line either, even though he has the hands and vision, he does not have a strength to battle for the puck and do some of the dirty work against the other team's top D pair.

What do you guys think? Is our 1st line a joke? The answer is quite obvious, but I want to hear what you guys have to say.

Oh and Carylol is a stubborn ****er. He needs to realize that this Holzer/Kotska experiment was long over. It's time to put in real talent at the backend. Starting with Liles, and then Gardiner.

Nope. Our second line isn't really a second line. Apparently they are a checking line.

Most coaches would do their best to get their best players playing with their best. I am not sure why Kessel is always with Bozak when clearly he would be better off with Grabo

but hey what do I know, I don't have a Norris or a Stanley Cup

Got to split Kessel and Bozak up if just for a couple of games. Just to see if it can spark something.

Bozak shouldn't be on that first line in a million years. Who cares if he is Kessel's best friend,......get a true NHL center for that line please! No team made more money than the Leafs last year,....and they are raising seat prices up again. Will be the highest priced seats in the NHL. You would think they would have enough money to go out and get a first line NHL center.

I really have no idea how Carlyle doesnt see this. Kardi and Bozak should swap spots. Kadri is more of a first liner and Bozak a third. PLaying styles would support this too. But hey lets keep running with Bozak and hope he gets better !

Just because it's "clear" to you doesn't make it so.

The New York Rangers are the most valuable NHL franchise at $1.2 billion, taking the top spot on the Forbes list for the first time since 2004.

The magazine said Tuesday that Montreal is second at $1.18 billion, followed by Toronto at $1.15 billion.

Oh Heck NO!!!!

Sick of Bozak experiment. Its Done!!! Lets move on.

Also, Carlyle has forced the shut down role on both Grabo and Kuli. They are offensive minded players. Carlyle has to let them load and shoot instead of playing defence.

Check out Kulis stat in KHL and you would understand what I am talking about. Please do not say it is purely because of Malkin. For the puck to go in consistently a player has to have a decent shot. And the year Kuli got 30 he had some good snipes set up by MAC. Also, Grabo is a shooter/scorer he is not cut out to be a checker. It was pretty evident from one of his interview that he is not enjoying that role.

Bozak has zero skill (except faceoffs and an ok shot), he is a checker and he should be employed with that role. Bozak has no playmaking ability or for that matter griding or working the boards to win puck battles. Let the skillled guys get together and score

JVR-Grabo-Kessel
Mac-Kadri-Frats
Komorav-Bozak-Kuli (grind the opposing team's top-line while maintaining posession)
Orr-McClement-Fraz

On Defecne for the love of God

NO HOLEzer

Bozak just doesn't look like he wants the puck on his stick and Kessel's afraid of his shadow. No heart on this line.

Bozaks the only problem on the first line. He's improved and playing decent but he's just not first line material. Kessel is tied with a **** load of players for 18th in the league in points. JVR is 8th in goals in the league. Our 2nd line is what's really killing us. Grabo and Kule have been non existent on both ends of the ice.

Does it really take an NHL caliber coach to know that you shadow Kessel and JVR? Bozak is always passing to one of those 2, and more than likely Kessel.

not even close, JVR is a second liner, Bozak a third. Kessel would be a lot better if he had someone down the middle. Leafs are making the most of what they have

JvR currently sits tied for 5th in goal scoring. If he's a 2nd liner, we clearly must have the best 1st line in hockey.

The players on our 1st line right now have scored a combined 29 goals so far this season in 27 games. Over an 82 game season, that would be 88 goals. Lets say we distribute that as Kessel = 40, JVR = 30 and Bozak = 18. Would anyone complain about those goal totals?

I think the 1st line is just a little too easy to play against right now.

When they are on, it's a great line that works.

But they seem very soft on the boards, lose their fair share of puck battles, and generally don't seem to fight through checking all that well.

Lupul will change that though - big body presence, uses his size. Everyone loves the start JvR has made to his Leaf career, but for me Lupul can't come back soon enough on that line purely because he can help create that space and make that line a much harder line to play against in ways that JvR isn't quite comfortable doing.

Only 30 people scored 30+ last year, 29 the year before that. Having a 40 AND a 30 on a top line would be well above average I assume.

Our 1st line has 29 goals. How does that compare to other 1st lines?

I know Vancouver's 1st line had 19 goals, Anaheim's has 25 goals, Chicago's has 27 goals, Montreal's has 28 goals, Boston's has 19 goals, etc.

Yeah Id say its a decent 1st line.
