Cody Franson quietly establishing himself as a Top 4 D-man!

Guy has 8 points in 10 games.

He's playing sound two-way hockey and playing very physical on top of that. His signature move of pasting the opposing player on the floor with a punch take down behind the net is really growing on me.

He's getting his shots through and I've really felt he's stabilized our back end with his ability to make a crisp pass out of the zone, and on the offensive end, just getting his shot through whether its hitting the net or the back boards to keep the puck in.

Anyone else really as impressed with him as I am.

Feels good being right every now and then

Although, even a blind squirrel finds a nut from time to time

In my mind, you CANNOT go from top line on a playoff team like Nashville regardless of who you're paired up with, to a scratch, it never made sense to me

Its good in a way, because if he was playing like this with burke around, we probably would have traded him for gomez or something

He still seems prone to poor decision making every now and then in his own zone, particularly with moving the puck. He's been solid though.

Another guy that was horribly mishandled by Wilson

I figured he was all but done in Toronto until Burke was fired.

Glad to see him doing well - still a little too early to 'crown' him of anything

I'm glad he's doing well. Always felt he had a raw deal under Wilson. He didn't get much of a shot with Carlyle last year either but the situation had already unravelled by that point.

Carlyle is using him effectively and he's now in the right frame of mind. Very little chance he's going to get scratched again this year.

Kind of reminds me of the Beauchemin situation and how much better he got in Anaheim after Carlyle had some time with him. I think Ron Wilson had a way of deflating the confidence of his players.

I don't think he was ever a top line defender in Nashville.

And that last line makes no sense at all.

I like his game and was pretty confused with the way he was being handled under Wilson. Glad to see that he's gotten the opportunity to make a case for himself under Carlyle and has done a pretty solid job so far. He still has moments on the ice but honestly you can say that about every guy on our blueline. Mistakes are always going to happen up and down your line up. Some nights it'll bite you in the ass and other nights you'll escape lucky or make up for it somehow.

He's getting his shots through very well this year. Waits just half a second longer to take a good look before firing off a quick wristshot from the point that stays low. I don't see why he can't keep up his play for the rest of this season so long as he keeps playing confidently.

Might not be a top-4 once Gardiner and Gunnar return.

Gardiner
Franson
Fraser
Kostka
Liles
Komisarek
Holzer
Phaneuf
Gunnarsson

Look at this log-jam.

Wouldn't be surprised to see a trade, wasn't Edmonton at our last 3 games scouting?

I don't see them letting anyone go with the exception of Smyth and Gagner

I think its simply a case of him being given a chance to play. As you say, mishandled in the past by being in and out of the line up. I still think there is a lot of room for improvement in terms of defensively play and being more physical, but certainly has looked good offensively.

He played with Weber on occasion

The last line says, if he was playing well with burke around, he probably would have been traded for something awful

He's still not that great in the defensive zone (which is ok). I do like that's he become a bit more physical this year.

Phaneuf-Liles
Gardiner-Franson

should be the PP units once Gardiner is back.

Hopefully we can trade him at the trade deadline, towards picks or center position.

I'm really liking Franson's game... makes good decisions offensively, and most importantly, gets the puck through traffic with a quick release.

He is still young, and has some learning to do on the defensive side of things, but in the absence of Gardiner, has been a pleasant surprise!

I love his consistent physical presence this year. He's really stepped it up in that department.

He was 6th in ATOI for d-men while there.

I know what you meant, but what didn't make sense why you would say that.

When did Burke ever trade someone playing well for something awful?

Same here, I found him to be so incredibly soft last season.

How is he establishing himself as anything more then a bottom pairing D man??? He is averaging 15 minutes a night. Just because he is putting up points, doesn't mean he is anything more than a bottom pairing pp specialist. Time on Ice indicates whether a player is a top 4 D man or not and Franson is NOT a top 4 D man and has never been one at the NHL level.

thats great that his average was 6th, i didnt say anything about how many minutes he played, i said that he was paired with weber on occasion

and the burke comment was a joke in muse of a former gm, not every comment is a literal statement

He is only 25 years old. I say keep him

79 points in 208 career games fellas.

Compare that to Luke Schenn, Schenn has 78 points in 323 career games. They are both right handed d-man. Their skating is average and they both seem to make blunders on a occasional basis or get caught. But Franson I think has a higher ceiling than Schenn, and as this season goes on, he will remain in the top 4.

I'm still not a huge fan of his simply because he isn't as good skater and won't get down in the dirty areas (i.e block shots, etc.).

If he can continue to be a good puck-mover, he wouldn't be a bad fringe top 4 ...but on a good team, I see him more as a #5, 2nd unit type PP player.

I have said from day one he is a good player. Too many knuckleheads on here with 'sheltered minutes' and 'Weber made up for his shortcomings'. C'mon people, the guy can play, big body with a really long reach. He should have been a top four on this team last year but blow hard Burke and Wilson sat him on the bench for Komo and a host of other players. We're better with him in the lineup and a style and body type we desperately need to keep.
