a few years ago it was staal easy but he seems to have regressed. will never really see kopitars ceiling unless he played with a 1st line winger.

Wouldn't the case be the same for Staal? The best players he's played with include Erik Cole, Justin Williams, Corey Stillman, Ray Whitney, Jussi Jokinen and an 18-year old Jeff Skinner. Not to mention the guy has had 7-straight 70+ point seasons, which is every season except his rookie year.

Voting Staal.

Kopitar will score 5-10 more points while being better on D, and having a far better contract.

How does that make him better at playing hockey?

Both very good, tough choice. Went with Staal though.

Kopitar is one of the most underrated players in the league. He was dominant in the playoffs last year.

Kopitar.

I heard Eric Staal has been dominant in the playoffs before too. I don't know where I heard that, probably just unfounded rumours..

Really close. I like Kopitar by a hair because of his defense and in-season consistency, but I think Staal has more of an ability to take over games offensively when he's on.

Staal scares me more when the Leafs play the Canes/Kings, he's stronger and more physically dominant, a player who's incredibly hard to contain when he's playing well. Kotpirar is better defensively though, and quite talented offensively in his own right (though in more of a subtle, finesse way). Basically a wash for me.

not looking at the Poll but I will assume Kopitar is leading, I personally think that Staal is a tier above, and stats would back that up.

Actually if you look at the stats per year and game Kopitar is better.
Stall 592/9 or 66 pts a year and .89 pts a game
Kopitar 446/6 or 74 pts a year and .91 pts a game

It wont, but it does help decide who a team would rather have when its close like it is here.

But we aren't teams, we don't have to worry about contracts. Thus, I don't think they should be a factor unless the topic is "who would you rather trade for this season" or similar.

ehh it's close, Staal has never had under 70pts besides his rookie year, they are both very good.

Kopitar is not underrated anymore. He's not even the most underrated player in this poll.

As for the latter part, Staal is also good in the post season.

Look at the differences between conferences let alone divisions....

Career points per season, points per game, those don't mean anything. Kesler scored just 81 points in his first 238 games - he was a 3rd/4th liner playing a defensive role. Do you know how Kopitar and Staal have been used by their coaches their entire career? Do you know their development path?

Those numbers have absolutely nothing to do with who is the better player right now.

Very, very close. Both are great players. I'd give the edge offensively to Staal, but Kopitar wins defensively.

Overall, I'd go with Staal, because I believe he's better offensively than Kopitar, but the margin that Kopitar beats Staal defensively by is not a as large as Staal offensively.

their isn't a big enough difference between the 2 for one to be distinctly better than the other
