So.... I wrote a 660 character long excel formula today. I feel so ashamed of myself, because it works really well but I can't even really sift through it visually and I wrote the damn thing. It's indexing data in a manner that's even complicated to explain.

Needless to say, I'm finding it difficult to even break the thing down into its individual components to try and shrink it.

If anyone tries to edit this one day, they are going to feel like they are looking for a needle in a hay stack.

I wrote an Excel spreadsheet that was used to roll up D&D characters.
It took race, gender, age, etc into consideration when applying attributes. It was a freaking nightmare -- but it worked great! I later re-did it in VB.

I don't like to design spreadsheet 100% in VB because people don't know how to interact with it and it's resource intensive to write loops to append data rather than design a formula to parse data.

I already designed the VB backend so that it prompts the user to open various Workbooks of raw data from a couple directories with the filename inputted (through a few input box strings rolled up, aka Part Number + Revision Number, open .csv files, copy/paste data and close).

So I then designed a formula I'm working on that indexes said raw data and determines the max/min of a multi-dimensionally determined dynamic range.

The user selects the rows they want to Min/Max parse out via two data validation dropdown lists and the formula determines its column height via those lists. Then it finds its row coordinates for this dynamic table (created via a dynamic named range that updates itself when new data is appended) and gets its proper value.

If you followed all that, it's been about 25 hours of work so far and I'm quite pleased.

The worst part was writing a VB script which formatted the Form's Wrapped/Merged cells, because merging is terrible for code and in 2007 Excel can't autofit a Wrap/Merged cell so I had to make a loop manually determine ideal cell height in a copy/pasted dummy workbook for each cell.

Lots of work...

LOL...

Why do you think it's George? (That's actually a good name imo, if I have a baby boy it's on my list)

But it might be Adolf?

Is it a stereotypical German name?

First name: No, not stereotypical

Last name: Probably one of the more common German names (and most likely "Americanized")

I am a US Citizen
