Today we can see that Modo lost money this season,
http://www.svt.se/texttv/305.html
(Ill copy the text because texttv pages only last 36 hours)

1,4 miljoner i förlust för Modo

En misslyckad säsong med uttåg i
SM-kvartsfinal, 1,4 miljoner i förlust
och 19 spelare utan kontrakt. Det är
Modos facit efter säsongen 2004/05.

-Utan hemmamatcherna i slutspelet hade
underskottet blivit ännu större, säger
Jerry Hägström, klubbdirektör i Modo

Translation:
A failed season with 1,4 million SEK in losses,
19 players without contract and an early
elimination is Modos result for the 04/05 season.

"Without the homegames in the playoffs our
losses would have been even worse" -
Jerry Hägström Club President? for Modo.

Besides the 19 players without contract Modo
must also fina a new coach to replace resigning
coach Kent Forsberg.

Very much depends on what happens with the
NHL and what Peter Forsberg decides to do.

Im surprised that Modo lost money, not a big arena but they should get lots of sponsorship money. This worries me because if Modo lost money this season how about HV71 - no playoff revenue and they must have counted with it, Luleå got something like 1 million SEK from their municipality (kommun) and are still in a bad shape. (I wont start about how wrong i think it is for a club to recive taxmoney to survive). Mora and Linköping probably did ok, Malmö, Brynäs, Timrå and Djurgården havent finished their seasons yet and Frölunda, Södertälje and Färjestad are very likely making a profit.

This thread is very interesting specially for non-swedish like me. This because generally people consider Eliteserien, and also SWE hockey, as the best and powerful in Europe (well, probably Russian league now is more then SWE.....), so is very amazing read that clubs are in financial difficult.....

Someone can post a general analysis of SEL health?

If i understand actually HV71,MODO and Luleå are in deep difficult, for others only their position at the end of season determine financial health....

Why that difficulty? Is mainly because of high taxation?

HV71 will lose money but they got lots of cash in the bank so there are no worries for them. Modo was a surprise to me aswell, the swedish lockout players (Sedins, Näslund) we are told played for almost nothing, although Salo, Timander and Forsberg probably cost more. Their defence upgrade late in the season (Kaberle & Aucoin) probably cost them some and maybe they calculated on making the semifinals.

The taxation shouldnt be the reason, its a constant factor it doesnt vary very much.

The biggest reason is probably the "arms race" that started with the lockout, if one club A buys player X then club B must buy player Y..........

I think Timrå IK has had a decent economical season, they have even declared that they will pay off roughly 10 of the 20 million loan they took when they got the work on the Arena done.

Aki Berg and Mikka Kiprusoffs taxmoney will take a chunk of that though. (If they win tonight)

I find this quote from the Aftonbladet kinda funny...

Quote:
Andra faktorer är det stora antalet lockoutspelare där Modo haft kostnader för flygbiljetter, klubbor och boende för de utländska spelarna.
That means "Another factor is the great number of lockout players where MoDo had expenses for plane tickets, sticks and accomodations for the foreign players."

Now that sounds kinda funny, for one thing, it's not like they fly back and forth across the Atlantic ever second day, and what's up with the sticks?? Don't all the players get sticks on behalf of the team? :lol
