Should Flames Target Briere?

It has been reported today that the Flyers will buy out the last 2 years of Briere's contract. Do you guys think we should target him during free agency? I think he would be great for the young guys and we can possibly slot him in on the 2nd or 3rd line. If we end up trading Tanguay or Cammalleri (or both) we can't just ice all our rookies so we will need some vets. He is reportedly looking for a 1-2 year deal and is getting a lot of interest (15 teams as per Dreger). What do you guys think?

I wouldn't be opposed to him signing here on a 1 - 2yrs (max) contract. He would be a great mentor for the young kids, + he would/should bring a solid return at the TD.

Well i'm biased on this because he's one of my favorite players, so ya i think we should target. Would he want to come here? NO!

Briere has stated himself he will not move far away from his kids who live in Philly so I don't think the flames have a shot here

The location might be an issue as previously mentioned. I still hope they make a good pitch for him. With all this cap space I wouldn't mind overpaying granted that it stays a short term like 1-2 years. I think he could be another Hudler for us, not in the sense of style of play but the kinda fit he would have with the team.

Danny Briere on a 1 year deal, meh why not? But I think he probably wants to play for a contender.

If we could get him and not overpay than I would be all for him comming to Calgary. But I don't think it will happen he wants a playoff contender and somewhere close to Philly. My guess will be he stays in the east where he can still visit the kids occasionally when he's on the road against the flyers. I think he will sign with Toronto or Ottawa that's if they are in the market to grab him.

Yeah I agree he would be a nice pickup, all class and skill, but I don't see him choosing to come here.

But realistically, no chance he signs in Calgary as mentioned above he wants to be close to family and also he is 35 and will want a chance to win. I could see the Islanders as a fit or Toronto

No thanks to Briere. Lecavalier would be another story however.

Would take him on a 1-2 year deal. But theres no way he wants to end his career on a losing team. Yes I'm assuming we will be losing the next couple years.

The Flames should target guys who are willing to play on a bottom feeder. Maybe guys who need to rejuvenate their careers or who want an opportunity to be the big cheese on the team. Or even guys who are more concerned with a big pay cheque, possibly because they have a gambling debt or princess wife and spoiled kids, or something.

I see guys like Stalberg, Penner, Bozak, Brunner, Letendresse, Raymond, Bouchard, Clowe, McAurthor, Lombardi and Connolly in terms of point producers. Guys like Briere, Horton, Iginla, Riberio, Roy, Morrow and Jagr will go to competitors.

I don't know why it doesn't appeal to more free agents who want to win a cup to sign 1-year deals with a rebuilding team. That way instead of having to gamble on their team being a contender, they can guarantee it by getting traded at the deadline!

According to cap geek next years free agents look very promising. I wouldn't mind Vinny comming to Calgary or even Richards if he's not too over payed.

I would actually take Danny on a one year deal, just adds another player to trade at the deadline. On the other hand, he will not be leaving the East coast.

Honestly Flames are going to be ridiculously thin on nhl level talent going into this year, that is my prediction.

People tend not to like moving around so much, especially if they have families.

Free agent classes always look promising a year away. Most of the players usually end up getting re-signed however.

And no to Briere. Not only because he's not going to leave the east coast for family reasons, but the Flames do not need a small, post-apex player like Briere who's at his best in the post season.
