MLB randomly opens historical video vault to public

To quote Jonah Keri from over at Grantland

Quote:
Major League Baseball, which has hoarded its old archives and clips like Scrooge Freaking McDuck, suddenly released a treasure trove of amazing old highlights. You can find the main archive here.
http://www.grantland.com/blog/the-tr...r-productivity

Here is the link to the archive.
http://mlb.mlb.com/search/media.jsp?mlbtax_key=classic

You can search just about any term you want and chances are you will get to witness an iconic moment that until now was never available online. MLB's policy on video is to prevent it's own fans from seeing it. Until now. They released an amazing archive of highlights. Seriously, just type in a year and see what comes up.

I don't know how to embed a non-YT video on this site, but here is one of my favorite moments that I never thought I would see again.

About time. Have so many moments that are in the head and trying to just explain them to people doesn't have the same effect.

I've seen VERY little historical film of this. Remember, MLB teams were not in the practice of saving tapes until very recently. Even a game like Pedro's 17K game against the Yankees in 1999: I have never seen it from the Boston feed, except for a DVD a friend made me off of his own personal tape of the game. I wouldn't be surprised if they lost the tape.

Plus it was a Friday evening game. Teams didn't televise too many of their games before the 80s, so it might not have even been televised.

edit: ix says it more succinctly than me.

A personal favorite. I literally have not seen this since the day it happened. That might be the longest home run I have ever seen hit to right field at Yankee Stadium.

Great stuff, I always despised the MLB for being such Nazi's when it comes to allowing highlights around the internet. It was impossible to find great moments before, one thing that's good about the NHL is they don't take every clip on youtube down like the MLB does.

Amazingly, even ESPN has to remove MLB highlights out of their top 10's when they upload the videos to youtube.

I think it's a really stupid move by the MLB to be honest.

Haha, I was thinking about posting that. Maybe the next step is to allow people to upload MLB videos on Youtube. It's gonna take a while before that happens, though. MLB is full of old people who refuse to get with the program.

Actually, if they made their own youtube channel and put up clips and other videos, they could make money from the ad revenue. It wouldn't be a lot, but it'd be something..

The NBA doesn't seem to mind random people uploading their clips.

The NBA needs the free publicity more than baseball.
