Highly drafted prospects that have disappeared...

Minnesota has two that just kind of vanished that were taken pretty high. Roman Voloshenko and Ondrej Fiala. Voloshenko did well in the AHL and then just disappeared the next year. There were rumors of drug problems with Voloshenko but nothing ever came of that rumor. Fiala had knee injuries but never knew why we didn't give him a look. Anyone know what happened to them? And any other prospects that just disappeared after being drafted in the first couple of rounds?

Nate Hagemo (2nd round 2005), was considered a dman prospect with huge upside. Had a shoulder injury that nearly derailed his career, then ran into drug and alcohol issues at U of Minnesota while he was sidelined. Last I heard he had all of 4 games with Elmira of the ECHL about 4 years ago.

Jonathan Filewich for the Pens. He actually put up some really good numbers in the AHL. 30 goals and 56 points in 2006-07. He got a cup of tea with the Pens, and didn't do well. Went back to WBS and sucked. Came back to WBS the next year and was horrendous, and was then traded to the Blue for a draft pick. He's not playing in Europe.

Fiala plays for Czech team Znojmo which participates in EBEL(Autrian, Hungarian, Croatian, Slovenian teams).

Before being drafted:

After becoming a drug addict:

After getting cleaned up:

Looks like a completely different person. Crazy what drugs will do to a person.

If I recall correctly, Filewich is playing senior hockey in the Tiger Hills Hockey League (in Manitoba).

Less than .5ppg. I'd say more was expected out of him when he was drafted as high as he was. I remember being at that draft and wondering what the isles were thinking passing on him. Guess it's a good thing they did.

Didn't he have concussion issues?

Troy Hesketh.

An Oilers scout lost his job because of vouching for him.

Drafted in the 3rd round, had a bunch of top NCAA teams recruiting him, ended up losing his scholarship, played half a season of Division III, then just vanished into thin air.

what i remember about Voloshenko is the following: the Wild wanted him to be well surrounded in Houston, so they traded Z. Michalek for two AHL players. after that season, Voloshenko figured he had proven enough in the AHL and wanted a roster spot with the Wild... while of course, the Wild wanted him to continue to develop. so he bolted to Russia and the Wild took this stance that if he's not in the AHL, he's not gonna get his shot.

in the meantime, Michalek became a very solid shutdown defenseman for PHX.

Yes like several other big busts Calgary has drafted injuries derailed him. He has now retired due to his concussions.

Jens Karlsson. Drafted #18 overall in 2001.

Couldn't even forge out a successful career in the Swedish first division (Elitserien) and has spent the majority of his career playing in the Swedish second division (Allsvenskan). Incredible a first round pick can't even find a job in the top Swedish division.

Though after meeting him, I can't really feel that bad for him...

Why did he leave for the norwegian league? Seems weird.

What do you mean with the bolded part?

I'm not sure why he left. I don't follow his career that closely. But if he's playing in the top Norwegian league I'm sure there is more money there. He also hadn't really enjoyed that much success in Boras over the past two years considering he'd been pretty dominant previously.

Regarding Jens' personality, he just isn't a very likeable guy in my experience. Maybe he is bitter about his career but he makes it hard to root for him.

I think Filewich had to retire due to injury, possibly concussion problems if I remember correctly.

Yeah, it's not like he disappeared. He retired in 2011 due to concussions. Played in the Flames org up to then.
