A blessing would be a SS with good plate discipline and defense, who could be the leadoff hitter.
Marte has improved there in the sense that he's not a one or two swing and done guy anymore, but he's still a poor judge - he's taking a ton of pitches, but half of them are strikes. The eye will come after the patience does, but he's obviously never going to be an ideal leadoff hitter.

But this team is just sad when it comes to drawing walks. 10 times last night, roughly a third of our at bats, we had a guy at the plate with 3 balls...and we walked once. The numbers aren't any friendlier tonight.

The problem here is the knee-jerk reaction is the complain about Robbie Grossman being dealt out...but if your best skill is walking you're not going to be a great Major Leaguer. Grossman still projects to be a 4th outfielder or a mediocre 3rd guy. I loved the guy, but if Robbie Grossman is your answer then things are bad.

The fundamentals on this team are just atrocious...at the Major League level you can say it's a system thing, but in the minors I say it's just a players thing. The Pirates scouts definitely favor tools to anything else...which would be great if we had the proper guys in the system to teach the proper habits instead of waiting until they get to Pittsburgh to try to fix things. It blows my mind how the Pirates will break down just about every pitcher who enters the system, but batters don't seem to get that same scrutiny.

Feeds for Major League games are extremely sparce...MLB's lawyers are effective and there's very little interest in Europe (where most illegal streams tend to originate from).

Pedro against lefties is just sad.

Vin Scully stat: 127 of Pedro's 299 career at bats against lefties have been strikeouts. If all games were day games against righties Pedro would be one of the best players in baseball...

Tomorrow is a day game...but Ryu is another lefty.

That sucks Big. I have been very fortunate attending home games. 11-0 in my last 11 attended.

When I saw the Dodgers get the first run last night I said, "well that's game".

How sad is that?

At least somebody accepts the reality that the Pirates suck.

...or theyve faced two of the best pitchers in the national league and one up and coming pitcher that had dominated them similarly in years past.

That may be true, but the Bucs still stink.

True or not - the Buccos are batting as a team below what Major League pitchers hit last season. The Cubs 2nd and 3rd starters, which are nothing special, shut us down too.

Obviously this won't be sustained all season, but this is digging us a deep hole because all five pitching performances by Pirates pitchers were good enough to warrant a win. The Pirates have a team ERA of 2.09 right now (0 unearned runs against too), 2nd best in the Majors...but we have 17 hits through 5 games. Our team OPS is .330.

Ryu is going to no-hit us today.

*puts on McCutchen jersey and heads to the game*

Don't worry, the Fort and John McDonald will really spark the offense.

So what will be higher by the end of the season, the Pirates Hits per game or the Penguins goals per game?

The Fort really ripped that one. I've been pretty satisfied with Martin, but if he's not hitting, I think we should see a major/minor platoon in the sense that The Fort plays every 3 or 4 days. I think he could provide a bit of an offensive spark if he's well-rested.

It will be interesting to see if Locke can continue the trend of good Pirates pitching... it would suck to lose a 7-6 game right now.

Looks like Cutch gave the "shhh" sign to someone in the stands after hitting his home run and returning to the dugout.

Today is the last day of the free preview of mlb extra innings. All I got to see this week was this craptastic effort from the pirates.
