No chance Appel drops past #2; Epstein and the Cubs have no qualms with paying Appel what he wants. He and Gray have demonstrated to be the top of the college pitchers and are probably locks for top3 at this point.

This is heartbreaking! I've been a fan of the Buccos ever since I was a little boy.

It's to the point I can't even be considered a traitor if I start rooting for the O's instead.

I am so very close to jumping ship.

Yeah, I was really joking around. I could not care less about Appel.

I am still a fan, but I picked the Giants as my second favorite team back at the start of '10, and really followed them closely. And that has worked out pretty well, haha....two championships later. (one of my sisters lived there for 15 years, and I spent some time there. Love the city.)

I can't quit on the Pirates. They'll be in the midst of their 40th consecutive losing season and I'll still be tuning into 75% of the games every year like a dope.

As much as I am sickened by this team, I'll still watch as well. I still pay for the MLB satellite package and every year I think that I'll cancel, but don't.

I was expecting a better start than this, maybe this year the Pirates are saving their best baseball for September and October for a change

I get the feeling that I've not missed much by not watching the West Coast games?

One thing to note as well is that the Pirates have one of the harder early season schedules; if they don't completely get crushed, they may be able to pick up some games later.

Oh yeah, the April schedule is brutal. Hardest in the Majors, if I'm not mistaken.

The unfortunate thing is we don't have those gimme games against the Astros anymore - just a 3 game series (in Houston I believe) later in the season. Eventually this team is going to have to learn how to beat good teams on the road.

This is true, as well as the fact that they haven't even played a week of games yet. It's been a really bad start, but baseball is a really, really long season.

I thought Locke looked ok yesterday. If he pitches around that well every time out, that's a serviceable #5 starter. I'm very interested to see how Sanchez does; I don't have much confidence, but he got results last time out, which is all that matters.

Haha, I was tied up doing some stuff on my computer at the start of the game, so I didn't notice the time until it was 10pm... so I missed the tidal wave of offense.

In the event that that happens, (1) we're even more screwed, and (2) Phil Irwin had a decent game for the Indians tonight, so he might be the call up.

Very early days obviously, but I'm liking Melancon. That cut fastball looked handy tonight.

Wish he had a tad more on his four-seamer though, but he has apparently been able to get up to 96-97 mph in recent seasons, so maybe he'll ease up into that bracket the more he throws. I wonder if he and Grilli will switch up at any point this season if he starts throwing that hard.

Well, that was just me being a sarcastic, cynical ******* when he left the game. I don't actually know how badly he's hurt.

It will be interesting to see. Judging based on Clint Hurdle's ability to recognize how to use pitchers in leverage situations, I assume that Grilli has a lock on the closer job unless he starts having big troubles. But then again, it might be better to have the better pitcher as the "set up" man, as was the case last season with Grilli, ironically.

Melancon is definitely making the Hanrahan trade look just fine so far.

The Hanrahan deal will go down as a win in the end, I imagine. Melancon is a good pitcher and even if he's not going to be a closer (which he very well could be), he should be a very fine set-up man. He had a bad half-season with the Red Sox last year...which says absolutely nothing as that entire team was a mess. Then there's Pimentel, who was a big WTF sort of inclusion in the deal, having a phenomenal Spring and looking great in his first minor league start of the season...I'm nowhere near throwing him in our future rotation, but Pimentel does look like an actual prospect and not just AA roster fodder.

Well, that and we'd have lost Hanrahan at the end of this season regardless.

Grilli has the closer job until he proves that he can't handle it...I think we'll get at least this season out of Grilli there, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him and Melancon swap roles next year.
