Calgary claims Joey MacDonald

Per Darren Dreger, the Flames claim Joey MacDonald off waivers. This only makes sense if they're expecting Kiprusoff to be out for a while, quite frankly.

Soory to see him leave the Wings. Glad he'll get some playing time in Calgary. GL Joey.

Bingo. Really bad news for the Flames but maybe a good opportunity for Joey Mac to steal some minutes from a young goalie.

Bobby Mac just tweeted that Kipper could be back for Calgary's game on Wednesday.

He's a solid pro who deserves to be backing up in the NHL. Best of luck to him in Calgary.

I just saw that. This means that Mac will backup Kipper (This may actually turn out to be a decent tandem) and something will have to happen with Irving.

Man, I feel for the kid (Irving) - I hope he gets sent to an organization that will give him the chance he really needs (Whether that's with a decent coach in the A or back in the NHL).

Happy for Mac but what's so wrong with Irving? When he came in in the game Kipper got injured he looked great.

Not a fan of it, seems like a waste of a contract when Irving Taylor are both rdy to play

I think he's awful, but maybe that's just me. He's as far from Carey Price you can get.

Calgary stockpiling goalies, hmmm maybe they considering that rebuild after all? Could be interesting at the trade deadline.

As Calgary is pretty close to contract limit too... Irving wasn't that bad at all during the Canucks game just let 1 soft goal in but which goalie doesn't once in a while? Makes no sense unless a trade is coming I think Calgary is at 48 or 49 now... From a Red Wings fan how is Macdonalds play?

Joey MacDonald was solid for the Wings last year when Howard was injured. He didn't make me nervous at all and really works hard. He deserves a chance to show himself more in the NHL. He should be a backup in the NHL somewhere.

Most DRWs fans respect MacD and everything he's done for the hockey club (both in the NHL and AHL)

MacDonald won games when Howard went down last season and was part of that huge winning streak the Wings put up. For whatever reason, Detroit decided to sign Gustavsson to be the new backup in the summer and after that MacDonald saw the writing on the wall and wasn't too fond of the move. However, Holland did come out and say that he would try his best to trade MacDonald so he could get an opportunity to be a backup in the NHL somewhere else. Needless to say, considering how bad the goalie market was the last few offseasons, the Wings found no takers, as expected. Eventually MacDonald got injured at some point IIRC and thus wasn't on waivers to go down until now.

It just so happens that he finally got his wish and Calgary stepped up and claimed him. He was very adamant about not wanting to go back to Grand Rapids again and now he's keeping an NHL spot with this claim so good for him. He's a capable backup if he's all healthy and with no Karlsson in the system I think it's a fine claim by the Flames. Flames can send Irving down freely since he already cleared waivers less than 30 days ago.

Again, not too sure why the Wings went out and got Gustavsson considering how MacDonald was pretty good last year and was still signed but they chose to go with someone else and MacDonald was bound for the AHL again. Not only with Gustavsson but with Mrazek playing well and McCollum still there the Wings have too many goalies in the system. This was the best thing that could have happened to MacDonald.

Is Irving on a Two-way deal? that would mean he is waiver exempt... but GL to Joey Mac

How is that even possible? You think they're going to roll a MacDonald Irving combo?

Why would anyone trade for Iriving, they could have had him for free on waivers. You could get a 6-7th for him but thats for the luxury of sending him to the AHL.

The cynic in me says they trade Kipper right now for a good return, roll Mcdonald-Irving, finish low, get a Mac or Jones. Then rely on one of the two solid AHL goalies next year and Gillies/Brossoit year 3. But im a random poster.

Kipper is probaly back in a week and Iriving will be dealt

Kipper is a great goalie but he doesn't in with this new system he likes to see lots of shots, I think he will continue to have meh games as long as he plays here, not to mention there are teams like STL and WSH that could use a goalie so it may be the right time to move him.

But then again I also want Irving to be given a fair chance with this team.

The argument would be that if a team picked up Irving on waivers, they'd be forced to play him in the NHL.

Irving is not ready for the NHL right now. He made some great saves in his 2 games this season, but he's prone to soft goals and has confidence issues.
