Maybe Staple is right about that, but maybe not. I'll be honest, it doesn't sound like he gets too much 'inside information' on ANYTHING. A fan from this board could have hosted that chat. It seemed like 99% guess work. Obviously Snow is a secretive guy (Some people don't really dig that, I don't really care 1 way or the other) I wouldn't put a ton of stock into answers like that from Staple, sound like he's going off of very little info, and some of that info may in fact be deliberate misinformation.
Not really sure why Garth would be feeding him misinformation about Kirill Petrov.. It's not like Staple printing anything about him will change whether or not he comes to America.
I didn't mean specifically Petrov (for misinformation). Just that I'm sure sometimes Garth or Isles execs might put some noise out there from time to time.
If they wanted points, they would have drafted Morgan Rielly. Instead, they decided to go with the big defensive defenseman. If you watched the game yesterday you'd probably understand why they decided to go that route.
A big defense goes a long way. Our tribe of girl scouts were told where and when to skate in the offensive zone by Ottawa.

Im almost positive in an article or chat last year he predicted both lee and petrov would sign, so i agree he doesnt have much inside info. Also i would not worry about petrov, until next year anyway since he signed a 2 year deal in the khl.
Not going to post the video of this one. Reinharts point shot was blocked out in front. Foster picked up the puck, wheeled around the zone for a bit and did a nice give and go with Corbett. It was an accounting type assist for Reinhart.
In watching the recent videos of Pedan and Pelech, along with following their overall seasons along with Pokka, Reinhart and Mayfield....... can you imagine getting Jones as well.... wow! Geez, even without Jones, I'd like to fast-forward three years ahead to see the defensive lineup:
Hamonic Reinhart
Donovan Pedan
Mayfield De Haan
Pelech Pokka
Plus maybe one of MacDonald, Strait or Hickey could be around still for veteran depth............... Actually, who knows what could be three years from now.... Half these guys could be traded by then....
BUT.. what I don't see.....................
****** What I don't see from our defensive prospects is a smooth skating, fast, slick, power play specialist in the mold of a Mark Street or Lubomir Visnovsky........ A recent pick in that mold was Morgan Reily by Toronto last year.
The closest we have is Aaron Ness, but I don't count him because he's a fringe prospect. Besides that, offensive type of prospects that actually grade out as really solid prospects are Donovan and De Haan, but they are more 'heady' type of offensive D-men than fast, slick pp specialists that rely much on their wheels.
So besides the two heady type of offensive, puck moving D-men in Donovan and De Haan, most of the other guys are big strong D-men that happen to skate well for their size and provide a bit of offense, but certainly not PP specialists.......
I know it's not as simple as putting each D-man into one category, such as 1) small, heady offensive specialist, like a DeHaan/Donovan.. or 2) big, mean D-man with decent skating and offense for his size....
Plenty of guys overlap and have versatile games, which is great about this crop of D-prospects we have.... BUT, I don't think we can dispute missing that smooth skating, burner, Streit/Lubo type (so as a Morgan Reily)....... who's our pp specialist??
Thoughts on the need for this particular type of D-prospect??
ITM???

in a world where hopefully these guys pan out de haan would be the puck mover your looking for however..if that is a need probably would have to go the UFA route on a pp specialist
This was one of the two guys that I was going to mention (Russo) being the other that petrocelli fotgot to mention.
Kichton is not Morgan Reilly (doesnt possess his speed/puck handling). But Kichton does remind me a lot of Mark Streit. Excellent vision/breakout passing/stretch passes/PP QB/ and great Awareness and always picking the right time to pinch down low, He can also finish.
He's not terrible in his own zone and stocky/strong enough to not get tosssd around with ease as streit now often does (and ness usually does).
Hickey is a nice stop gap and i look forward to seeing what he can do in the mean time. I love de Haans game but he looks fragile, contingency. Plans for him are mandatory. Donovan is growing into a complete dman, but has excellent pp skills (a shame pellerin doesn't seem to see that).
I do agree though that this team needs one more dman, a true #1. Jones would be perfect but we're a longshot there.
I apologize for spelling/grammar mistakes, i shouldn't type on a smart phone.
Not even close. Rielly plays like Brian Leetch (although I doubt he'll end up that good as a pro)

why haven't they signed Kichton? I don't think the team is very high on him. I wouldn't be surprised if they let him walk. He should be in the AHL this season, if they have any intention on keeping him.
I imagine Russo will get a deal. I've seen Russo a bunch of times and he's looking better and better. But he's at least 2-3 years away from pro hockey.

Why is Hickey a stop-gap but Donovan is maybe a top four guy? I'd say Hickey's shown a lot more than Donovan has - no? Seems like fans like to dump on NHL players in favour of players in junior, NCAA, AHL that have "potential". Why is Anders Lee better than Josh Bailey and Matt Martin?
Are we seriously expecting any one of deHaan, Donovan, Kichton to be better than Hickey in the NHL NEXT YEAR?
I went to the Leaf game last night, watched Tyler Myers, boy was he awful. He looked like a Norris Trophy winner in his rookie year and he is a complete liability out there. Imagine a taller Ty Wishart with less confidence.
Let's leave it at this: NHL hockey is really hard, especially hard for defensemen and even harder for smaller defensemen. I wouldn't be so quick to pencil ANY of these NYI prospects ahead of Streit, Visnovsky, Hamonic, MacDonald or even the mysterious Martinek, especially not next year. Unless the goal is to finish bottom five next year as well.

Why haven't they signed Kichton? You're guess is as good as mine. Maybe they aren't high on him, or maybe they are confident they can sign him in a few months when Spokane is all done. We will find out soon enough. BTW I should clarify that when I say Kichton looks like Mark Streit it's important to note that it has been against WHL players. I'm not guaranteeing him the same success in the NHL, it's a major jump. In a perfect world, I sign Kichton in a few months and play him in Bridgeport for 2 years, let him succeed in the AHL and then we can think about bringing him up, He'll only be 23 (Thomas Hickeys current age) at that point anyway.
On that note, thanks for calling me out on the Hickey (stop-gap) label, that isn't exactly what I meant, BUT Having Hickey here as a seasoned Juniors/AHL prospect and currently capable NHL player acts as a stop-gap to allow guys like Donovan/Kichton/de Haan to develop until they are around the same age (23ish). Can Hickey be more than a placeholder? Absolutely, I didn't mean to sound like I was dismissing him at all. I'd say Hickey is garunteed this year and Next year at a minimum. What he does over these 100 games or so will determine a lot for his future.
I can't say with any certianty Donovan will be better than Hickey in the NHL next year, but it will be a good competition. I look at both of them and see similar players at similar stages. I watch a lot of AHL games and have attended plenty of Bridgeport Manchester games over the years (I live pretty centrally located to those two cities) I can't say that one is MUCH better than the other, I can say that I like Donovan better on the PP, though Hickey's wrist shot (while not nearly as hard as Donovan slapper) is very accurate. I look forward to Hickey AND Donovan being on the Island next year. (Kichton and de Haan will be in BPort as will most of the prospect dmen if they aren't in juniors).
I would be surprised if the Islanders had more than 1 of Streit, Viz, Martinek back next season. If I had my pick it would be Viz, but I'm sure it will be Streit.
Sorry I was traveling yesterday didn't get home until late.
Here is Strome's assist on the PP last night. Busy weekend, starting tonight. I'll be watching the Sound Tigers and should update pretty quickly tonight. Juniors highlights should be up soon after.
Watching ND-WMU on CBS Sports. They mentioned on the broadcast that TJ Tynan was struggling this year, yet Lee still is tied for the CCHA lead in goals with 17. Lee was interviewed after the first period and just used the usual platitudes. One thing I can say - the teeny-boppers (they still use that term??) will have a new hero; the kid is pretty good looking.
Russo is having a nice season but he doesn't really stand out much. After watching Lee two years ago and commenting on his skating, it does look like it is better but not great. One thing I wonder about a little is his endurance. There were a couple of shifts where he got a little winded when he had to back-check aggressively. However, he still has his nose for the net and one of his greatest strengths when I've watched him is his instincts in the offensive zone. He really seems to play the angles well and understand how to get some room to shoot.
Let's see how the final 2 periods play out; WMU 2 - ND 1 after one.
Was at the game in Montreal and walked out to the 100 level before warm-up and I bumped into two scouts. I initially started talking to the younger one and recognized his last name from an old yearbook- I said are you so-and-so's nephew or son? And the younger scout said, how do you know my dad? Well he was standing right there, and he shook my hand when I told him I was an Islanders fan.
I asked him a bunch of stuff, but the highlight was that they are very confident they will be signing Anders Lee, who may very well find himself up with the big club next year.
They also told me the only reason Nino is still in the AHL is because of the spat with his agent. I love the way Garth is establishing boundaries and creating a real culture of accountability. Sends DP down, rewards Poulin.

3-3 in the third. Lee playing a pretty good game. Robbed in the third from the slot after putting himself in the perfect position to take the shot. Helped on the second goal by driving hard to the net and distracting the goalie.
Looks like Nino has given up. Soundtigers stink and one shot and a minus 4 tonight. Thank you to interim head coach Jack CapuAHole and interim GM Garth Snow for destroying this promising youngster
