Drew Doughty is -10

Kings fans, I know +/- is not the best statistic, but I'm curious how you feel his play has been this year.

Team is playing bad, therefore key player on team has negative +/-.

Look at his minutes and look at how little the Kings score, then it'll make more sense than just a number on a sheet of paper.

Not only that, but he has 0 goals and 4 assists in 10 games. He has been very disappointing on my fantasy team to say the least.

Well given its the key players that are expected to carry the team, you could just as easily say "key players are playing bad therefore the team is playing bad."

0 goals 4 assists -10 +/-
He's supposed to be driving the bus not hoping he can hook up a trailer and tag along.

The Kings can't buy a goal and he has played an average of around 30 minutes a game. Quick has been shakey/iffy this year (just look at HIS numbers) giving up horrendous goals that shouldn't go in and most NHL goalies should stop. We're missing Mitchell and Greene. Doughty has been strong this year, his numbers lie in this instance.

This should be a thread about Quick, not Doughty IMO.

Been saying this about Fowler for a while. Doty can still defend.

+/- depends on too many variables to be a reliable stat. I could brag that Koivu has the league's highest rating but who cares?

The Kings as a team have a 0.8 5-5 G/GA ratio, Doughty has a 0.33 ratio. So while their recent play has a small part to do with his stats, there's something else going on here.

Only Carter and Richards have a lower PDO on the team (that's sv% + shooting% while that player is on the ice) so some of it can be attributed to bad luck. However, those two also have a higher Corsi and therefore a better +/-. The season is young enough that these advanced stats may place a greater emphasis on mistakes that aren't his, but they certainly aren't painting a very pretty picture of him.

However, he did start the season off pretty slowly last year too, and then turned Norris mode on in the playoffs, so Kings fans will just have to hope this skid doesn't make their playoff hill climb into a mountain climb.

Until the last two games I think he's played great.

people seem to pick and chose when plus+-minus matters

some players get the benefit of the doubt, some don't

For one, he isn't as great as his following always suggests. Two, the Kings aren't playing that well and as one of the key players he sometimes tries to do too much (as any skilled player would do). Often when a player tries to do too much they end up getting bit in the ass.

He is a high profile defenseman playing a lot of minutes on a Kings team that hasn't been scoring and letting in goals.

Of course his plus/minus is terrible.

The Kings as a team are -5. That doesn't completely explain it.

But does he play on the PK, because that's what determines a good defenceman?

Doughty's been playing more minutes with Greene and Mitchell on the IR. Quick has also looked pretty shaky coming off his off-season surgery. The Kings are like this though, some times they look like a cellar-dweller team from the Pacific, other times they win the Stanley Cup. Their puck possession game has been fine. Once they regain their form they'll be beastly again. I doubt they'll repeat, but Drew hasn't been as bad as his stats sheet looks. Same with Scuderi. Tonight's a make or break game vs the Blues and Halak, and I would not be surprised if the Kings skate out with a win.

His on-ice SV% is .830. It doesn't really matter how good you play defensively at that point, you're going to be a minus player.

Quick currently has one of the worst save percentages of any starting goalie. Add to that Doughty has been taking all the difficult minutes with Mitchell and Greene out, it's not a surprise that Doughty's +/- is negative.

That could reflect badly on him though - if he's blowing his coverage, that gives more prime scoring opportunities and would lower a goalie's SV%.

When you play 30 minutes a night for a team that has the worst save% in the league. You are going to be a - player

I remember when Karlsson was a -30 (third worst on his team) and the whole board used that to prove he was bad defensively. This was playing in front of the NHL's worst goaltender, Brian Elliott. But since it's Doughty this time, it's ok.
