Not getting ahead of ourselves.

Of course we are all thrilled with how our team has played so far, but...

After 13 games this year, 8 wins, 5 losses, 7th in the league, 16 points, 39 goals for, 33 against, +6 in goals for/against.
PP is 26th in league, PK is 21st in the league. Reimer just got injured.

After 13 games last year, we had a 9-3-1 record, for 19 points, 45 goals for, 39 against, +6 in goals for/against. PP and PK struggling (don't have the stats), Reimer just got injured.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves, as good as we've looked, we had a better record last year, and we all know how that turned out. I hope that they keep going, and continue to improve our PP and PK. If we can get those two on track, as well as continuing to play a good team game, we have a shot... or we could implode like last year.

What do you think some of the differences are this year, and why we might continue success, where last year we faltered? When will you believe this team is for real?

Some are definitely setting themselves up to be disappointed.

I'm all for the recent winning streak but until they can consistently play like this, people should be cautiously optimistic.

We have seen this happen before.

Ron Wilson being gone is the biggest difference. Such a dooooosh.

We are playing better now because we have a real NHL coach behind the bench, and not ****ing Ron Wilson. I don't like to get my hopes up but I would actually be surprised if we don't atleast slip into 8th this year.

4 Game winning streaks are pretty rare. We'll see how far this will take us.

I agree with your sentiment. Not sure about last year, but at least this season, we're winning the puck battles and are strong on the puck (which was definitely not the case during our free fall).

This team is getting complements from other team's fans for it play too, but to me, I'll remain cautiously optimistic unless I see X besides its name in standings.

A big difference is having Kadri/Frattin instead of Connolly/Lombardi.

Also goaltending has been much much better.

Our early winning record last year was largely due to Kessel/Lupul/aphaneuf playing at an extremely high level. Kessel, Phaneuf, and Lupul combined right now only have 4 goals (I believe, too lazy to check lol).

In saying that, i wouldnt be surprised to see a 5 game losing streak, especially with Reimer injured now.

I will be cautiously optimistic until 36 game mark. After that the main board is gonna crash.

When they win the cup this year, not if, we will have 46 parades. One for each year we missed.

Defensive hockey means a more consistent team, plain and simple. Even if the Leafs are snakebitten, at least you can count on them playing sound defensive hockey and possibly sneaking a couple wins out that way.

The last few seasons were all about the offense, and if the Leafs weren't scoing the Leafs weren't winning.

For me the biggest difference is the coach and the system in place. Ron Wilson's run-and-gun offense was exciting to watch and was putting up great numbers, however it was completely unsustainable. To many risks taken by the D with no one backing them up. The team has really taken to Randy's system, which is still fore check based, but with a defensive responsibility built into it. We have seen players slip into old habits in a few games this year, but as the year progresses, it looks like guys are buying in more and more. It is also obvious that Ron Wilson despised the physical aspect of the sport, which made us terribly weak against bigger teams. I feel like that is changing too.

Good post and I agree.
But we've been through so much the last few years, it's nice to think this is "real"
Regardless, the fact we have a completely different style coach and a new GM there is hope for continued improvement.
We just need a few breaks along the way.
One thing I would hate (and Leaf fans will hate me for this) I do not want to win the cup this year (if that's likely)
All other fan bases will say, it's not a real win because of the shortened season.

Leafs haven't had a 5-game winning streak since February of 2007, last I checked.

Winning the Cup this year is just as difficult as in any other year, same number of rounds, etc....

Winning the President's Trophy might be slightly tainted by the shortened season.

I think key is we haven't really deserved to win 4 straight. There are signs of weakness.
But hockey is a sport, you don't always have to be the best team on the ice to win.
The real test is when the streak is over, how do the boys bounce back? Are they going to be fragile? Or take it in stride and play a tough game all year?
