Alexander Semin - Still Worth $7m/year?

11 games, 3 goals, 7 assists, 10 points, +10(team leading)

Seems to be playing well enough so far, what's your opinion? Is he worth his contract? Would you extend him if you were Canes GM?

Short term deal, so yes i think it was worth it even without knowing the outcome.

I'd wait.

If we sign Semin, than this is the team we are going into the next 5~ years with. It means, unless the cap goes way up or a trade, we won't be able to upgrade our defense. The only change would be (most likely) be Murphy for Corvo and a random Checker (our AHL affiliate) for Sanguinetti.

That said, Semin has been great. Great passer, great 2 way play. He had a 3 point night tonight, but his two way play was much more impressive. Him, Staal and Slutty are look very good together.

July 1st isn't getting anywhere closer, whether we resign Semin now or in 2 months.

Only on a 1-2 year deal at that cap hit.

I think he is a bit overpaid, there are a lot of guys making less I would take over him in a heartbeat. That said, I would still take him on the Pens for 7m.

Here's the thing, Semin could easily have twice as many points, if not for all the posts he's been hitting.

If I were Rutherford, I would absolutely extend Semin. He makes everyone around him (Eric Staal and Tlusty most notably) so much better, and his play in the defensive zone has been a pleasant surprise.

The only issues are timing and budget, since Rutherford's main priority *should be* upgrading our so-called defense.

Yes, hes worth 7 a year. Funny how GM's can only get one player right in NHL. I wanted the Canucks to sign him

Vincent Lecalvier isn't worth 6. More players should get one year deals.

I would do a 5y / 6m per deal in a heart beat with the way he has been for us.

As a Canes fan I want him signed. We've waited years to have a skilled, talented winger for Staal and we finally got him. He and Eric are showing great chemistry and as they showed tonight can be very dangerous.

Lucky/pathetic 3 point game tonight...

I'd give him the 7m for a year, but Carolina fans are taking 6m x 5 year extensions already haha.

1 year at 7 mill for a 30 goal scorer. I'd take it.

Despite what many people think, the guy does try a lot.

I remember he was criticized badly in the playoffs against Montreal. Guy had 44 shots in 7 games. Close to 7 shots a game...

Would never give that guy more than a one year deal. Don't trust him.

Always liked him as a player and never thought of him as a problem. Saying that i dont like one year contracts. He is UFA so the Canes could try to extend him but Im sure hes going the free agency route. I dont see him back in Carolina at all. THe NYI and several other young teams with low cap numbers will throw a multi year deal for about 6 million per

Guy is worth every penny of $7 million right now. Brilliant passing and behind JStaal the second-best defensive forward on the roster. He's hit at least 6 posts that I can remember and probably more.

Never in a hundred years did I think he would be this good.

Its his skating, it looks like he makes no effort, just very graceful on the skates.

No. He looks like he is skating slow, because he is skating slow.

If you want to see a legitimate effortless stride, look at Evgeny Kuznetsov.

But, but other teams fans were telling us for years that he is one-dimensional lazy floater that doesn't backcheck and is terrible defensively.

Canadian media can't get over this stereotype

Will be his subtitle for the rest of his career

Semin, the one-dimensional lazy Russian enigma

Just last week Semin saves a sure tap-in goal and Sportsnet's highlights went something along the lines of "Alexander Semin breaking up that play, not something you see much from him!"

Of course we're defending him, he's the best player on the whole damn team. Why would we not?

Anybody who says Semin is anything less than a dynamic, complete, 2-way world-class player needs to get a clue because they're not watching the same guy the rest of us are.

It's funny, because a lot of Red Wings fans dump on this guy every chance they get. Yet, they hate the way the Cherry talks about their precious Swedes.

I'm quiet glad the Pens didn't snag him this off season after all of those rumors that pretty much had him as signed.
Pens fans at the time were so against it, but now they must be pretty jealous. Can you imagine him alongside Malkin and Neal! Or better yet, since that line needs a good board player, slot Kunitz back to Malkins line and play Semin with Crosby...wow that would be scary...

That's like saying Ovechkin would have easily triple the points if there wasn't that pesky goaltender in the way. The goal is that size for everyone.

He's not. When he looks like he skating slow, its because he is. Semin is a above average skater, but he's not an elite one like you are suggesting.
