Yeah, and I've seen many Caps fans vehemently defend him too. Some people are sheep and will believe anything they're told by someone with a mouthpiece and an agenda. Others actually use their brain.

Washington playing like garbage.

I wonder what the problem was? Certainly not Alex "Mr. Scapegoat" Semin.
Alex Ovechkin is a locker room cancer.

Lol.

I remember arguing vehemently (mostly with the Sens board) about Semin's worth. About how he's being mischaracterized because they were trying to shift the blame in Washington from Ovechkin.

Semin is a phenomenal player...probably was the most talented and best player on Washington overall. I wish Ottawa had signed him to play with Spezza...could have been amazing.

Yeah, but I doubt that Caps' fans are swayed by the Canadian media. No more than I could be swayed by the Washington media.

He is a really good player that gets unfairly criticized for whatever reason. I still remember Pierre and Marc Crawford ripping Semin in the summer. It felt like they just found out that Semin slept with their wives or something.

That being said... I think 7 million is a little too high. If you are signing him to a long-term deal I'd try to sign him for around 5.5 million per year.

No long term contracts for him. Not saying he's lazy, but make sure he works for a contract. Although, could be risky with making him unhappy..

Carolina still got 13M cap space. Worth it. They got the money to sign 2 more Semin.

Yes. And anyone who has watched him play this season will agree. So impressed with him. He's the extra dimension this team (and Staal) have needed for years.

1 year at 7mil is not terrible. Gave him incentive to sign, and the Canes could more than afford it.

Would expect him to re-sign at some point soon for about 5.5 per year at something around 4-5 years. In the past, Semin never really got a chance to play full time on a line with a top flight and borderline elite center like he is in Carolina with Staal, ans its showing. Its paying dividends for Carolina already, and we're only 11 games into his first season.

This smear campaign perpetuated against Semin by the predacious Capitals organization and the nationalistic and xenophobic Canadien media is so ridiculous I wish I could laugh but unfortunately it's sickeningly offensive as well. The Capitals org and fans needed a pigeon to sacrifice and they choose Semin. Big mistake. Now, their entire empire is crumbing as their choosen "pigeon" rises like a phoenix under the wings of their division rival. Their hatred is sad and unwarranted, but understandable. Meanwhile, Canadien media is so ethnocentric and frightened as the country becomes increasingly inferior in the word of hockey that they are unwilling to acknowledge that there is a top payer in the NHL who wasn't birthed in Canada. Instead, they concentrate their efforts on trying to cage Semin as a "lazy" player, or "one dimensional" despite every stride he takes on the ice being evidence directly to the contrary. That is pathetic. Some birds aren't meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright. Washington tried it. And now they're being engulfed in its flames on Carolina's way to the top of the division and ultimately to the cup. Haters go on and keep hating and the winners will keep on winning. I hope you're enjoying the negativity because badadadada I'm lovin' it!

Maybe you should watch more Carolina games if you think he would be a liability to your team. He looks skilled and dedicated.

Canes are my Eastern team. I was stoked when they signed him. They needed a winger to take the load off of Skinner. Great signing! Wouldn't be so thrilled if that was a multi-year cap hit at that amount though.

When it comes to the NHL even in US markets, the Canadian media IS the media.

True. While it's nice to see NBC rallying behind the NHL, ESPN carries a far larger ratings share, and hockey is lucky to get 2 minutes out of a 60 minute Sportscenter.

Contract years are a much different beast for players than lets say...the 5th year of a 15 year deal. He's playing for his next contract for 48 games.

He's worth the 7 million we gave him mainly for what he's done with Eric Staal.

I'd take the money and offer it to Perry for 6 years, but Semin isn't a bad extenison option for 3 years for the Canes. Everyone knows what he brings and he's going to get paid somewhere so if he keeps it up in Carolina why not.

Someone will sign him to a 5 year 32.5 million dollar deal and I hope that team is the Boston Bruins.

For a one year deal? $7 million is great if he puts up ppg. http://capgeek.com/comparables/?season=2012&player=858
Comparables suggest the same I think, not the worst contract of that bunch, though not the best either.

Actually, Semin historically plays MUCH better in the 1st year of his NEW contract than in a contract year and worse in his contract year. This year happens to be the 1st year and a contract year. Double whammy?
