and a win by Vancouver puts Minnesota 5 points behind at the 1/4 mark of the season.

Its not that bad, you have van who is a top 5 in the nhl, then 4 bubble teams 6-10 range imo

The Flames are screwed until ownership (and to a lesser extent the fanbase) realizes they are not going to win anything with that roster. Watching them is almost painful.

The Avs are so banged up. That said, Sacco is an idiot.

Minnesota is young.

Edmonton is young with no defense and no grit.

It's a horrible division.

It's a horrid division but still better then the southeast if you look at both divisions as a whole since the Northwest has Vancouver which is an elite team and the Southeast is all bubble or worse teams with the distinct possibility of the team that wins their division only getting into the playoffs due to the guaranteed top three spot.

Pretty much this. NW over the SW on the strength of the Canucks who are a legit top 10 in the league. Last year only a single team from each division made the playoffs, and with the standings as of today (things can change of course) you have the exact same thing. Except of course Vancouver deserves to be in the top 3 while Florida/Carolina are merely the best of the worst that get a gimme. Washington should be the SE's counter to the Canucks but they've fallen far.

Is this now a worst division than the SE?
NW

Canucks - 16 points (11 GP)
Oilers - 13 points (12 GP)
Wild - 13 points (12 GP)
Flames - 9 points (10 GP)
Avalanche - 9 points (11 GP)

56 GP - 60 PTS

SE

Hurricanes - 13 points (11 GP)
Lightning - 12 points (11 GP)
Jets - 11 points (11 GP)
Panthers - 9 points (11 GP)
Capitals - 7 points (12 GP)

56 GP - 52 PTS

Canucks > Hurricanes
Oilers = Lightning
Wild > Jets
Flames = Panthers
Avalanche < Capitals (considering half the Avs roster is out)

Northwest is better than the Southeast.

The Canucks, Wild and Oilers would all currently be leading the southeast.

I can almost give them a pass this year, considering they won the cup last year. That would demotivate anybody.

What was their excuse last year? And please, please don't say injuries, because the Canucks suffered plenty of those.

If this does end up being true (and it's too early to say either way), can we go ahead and make a rule where every thread about it has to call them the Northworst? It's only fair after hearing Southleast at least once a season since its creation.

As an Oilers fan Canucks are absolutely an elite team and it's not because they play in a ****ty division. They play an actual system and have elite players at every position. You don't how terrified I was that they would win the Cup the last couple of years especially 2011. Their "window" is slowly closing but they're not a team people should be surprised by if they win it all. It's not like they are the only team that benefits from their weak division, the other elite teams in the west still get to feast on the NW four times in an 82-game season.

First of all, no they wouldn't. Carolina would be ahead of both the Wild and Oilers based on GP.

But even then, that kind of thing is irrelevant during seasons when there is no interconference play. The standings are based on 2 exclusive groups of opponents.

Quite true.

It's sad when fans of other teams start to recognize your team's problems before management makes any attempts to rectify the situation.

Worst part is that they will likely let Sacco finish out his 2-year contract now given our injuries by citing that he didn't have a healthy roster to work with this year.

If one team completely dominates the rest of the division, that division as a whole is stronger? How does that make any sense?

Wouldn't the division be stronger if there are at least 2-3 teams that could win the division (ala: the Atlantic, the Central, etc)?

I'm not so sure. Backlund was a driving force in the Flames wins and he's gone 4-6 weeks. The rest of their centres are awful.

Baertschi and Cammalleri are also still both out - although likely shorter term. And who knows what's going on with Kiprusoff?

It's pretty weak, but the SE is definitely worse.

Yeah, it's not the best division but I expect both Minnesota and Edmonton to turn it around eventually this season.
