you can have him for peanuts. he wins draws but his contract is not looking good right now
Yep, good at draws but not much else. However, he freaking loves to shoot the puck from a terrible angle. Same spot every game. He scored with that same shot last year in the playoffs though.
Overpaid by about 33% but his play has been great and about what most were expecting. 2nd best faceoff man in the league. 25 point pace. Gritty, though I'd like him to throw his weight around more. Rock solid defensively of course.
Seems well liked and looked up to. Our bottom 6 is very young so he provides some much needed veteranship.

tried that shot tonight, too lol.. that's about all the offensive prowess he has sadly
You guys freaking out over Gaustads salary are missing the big picture... having failed to sign Suter and Parise we are not going to be bumping into the cap any time soon, so paying a million or so morethan market in exchange for a very competent 4th line center won't actually keep us from signing someone else, which is the only circumstance in which overpayment is a problem. I mean, its not like its any of your money....

Bingo. Gaustad is good at what he does. He provides size, defense, leadership, and face off prowess. We have the cash and space. We are way under what we were said to be spending this year ... What is the problem?!?
The problem on this team isn't Paul gaustad. It is a weakened transition game, power play that is struggling to regain its number 1 identity (or any identity), and the age old lack of true scoring forward. When the first two are off, we are going to struggle as a team.
I don't think his contract was inflated at all last night. He was huge at the dot in the second period. Sometimes you pay a guy to win face offs and be a man on the PK.
not too mention if you didn't see PGs value lastnight beyond the dot you weren't watching; we simply don't kill off Marty's nightmare of a 2nd without him, and maybe not the 40some seconds of 5-on-3. Yes, NS is probably as effective at PK, but no one else is anywhere close. I know that's not sexy, but pretty important on a team that's gonna' be D-first for another year or so yet.
I've criticized him at several points this year, but he's been pretty solid in ways you don't normally notice. He is 2nd in the NHL in faceoff % and has been killing it for us on the PK. Dirk's write-up on him provides some more quantitative detail:
I think he has been doing what we signed him to do and that works. I don't care about the salary issues, it's the 1st round pick that hurts way more, but it's not like we got fleeced blind. Deadline trades are expensive.

if owners are true to their word, it will become a problem. this is year 1 of 4... with the cap probably shrinking next year. he better be damn good at draws for 4 year or we are gonna be really hating his contract. i can deal with his contract now but in a year or two with a shrinking cap we will see.. and honestly, in a weird way, it is kind of my money in a microscopic way. i mean i have supported this team for a long time
Overpaid, sure. But he's pretty much done everything expected. He's the sole reason why we, as a team, are like 6th in FO% this season. He's strong in pretty much everything but offense.
I doubt people would be complaining so much if the other forwards were pulling their weight offensively.

I think this is the better statement.
I still want to know why were not giving Beck, Latta or Watson a look. It's not like they'd make us worse offensively.
He's overpaid I guess but personally I think it's good that we're financially capable of overpaying a 4th line faceoff specialist. We knew what we were getting and we were okay with it.
We pay him to win face offs and he does just that. If the madman who showed up against Minnesota makes an appearance every now and again (sans the horsecrap penalty) so much the better!
