Giggle Drops.. Was only loved for the backdoor tap-in while he was a Penguin.

Agreed.

Which is why we are all happy he is scratched.

That Ryan Whitney would be the #1 defenseman on a team is a big reason why that team would finish dead last.

I don't know what to tell you. In 10-11 there were dozens of productive puck movers who weren't soft pylons. Whitney was not among them, let alone a top 10 D in the sport.

In 05, Dick Tarnstrom was one of the most productive players at his position on a last place team. Did that mean he was a top-10 d? Nope, that meant his team was so bad there was nobody else to get touches on the puck.

He was good that year but not close to getting Norris votes or a top 10 dman.

Yes he was. Before his big injury he was dominating the league. His first 54 games with Edmonton before his ankle injury he had 38 points and was +20.

2010-11 Edmonton Oilers 35GP 2G 25A 27P 33PIMS +13

He made a hell of a start that year, make no mistake about it. Our best D-man since Pronger in those 35 games. But of course, then everything went south to the point that he is completely useless with a bad attitude to boot.

So 2 seasons ago he was better than Lidstrom, Weber, Chara, Suter, Doughty, Keith, Seabrook, Pronger, Letang, Visnovsky, and Errhoff? All of whom had Norris votes that year, guess who didnt have any. Thats right, Ryan Whitney.

He scored 150 pts in 253 games for Pittsburgh and he is pretty much universally hated among pens fans. There's more to being a good offensive dman than points. He's a poor skater with poor defensive instincts and is unbelievably soft. He's worthless for a team that wants to be great.

He didn't play the full season.....if he maintained that pace and had 63 points and was +40 something pretty sure he would have been in the convo.

Judging by what I've read in this thread, a big no from Detroit. We have enough old guys that can't skate or doing anything as it is.

You forgot Gonchar, Enstrom, Boyle, Timonen, Seidenberg...probably even Green.

And it's worth noting every one of these guys (other than Green) is above-average to great in his own end, and that Whitney's never been better than putrid.

Hell, in 10-11, you'd have been a fool to flip Golgoski for the guy. Gogo isn't without his faults, but he did and does, quite literally, every single thing a defenseman can do better than Ryan Whitney ever has.

Few years from now you'll hear Cherry say something like "Annnnyway why did those Oilers let that Whitney go? Just like they let Brewer, Pronger, and Souray go!"

Ya... We really let Pronger go.

Definitely sounds like something Cherry would say.

Hahah yea the Ducks traded a top 10 dman for Visnovsky. Get a grip kid, Whitney was never top 10.

Whitney was one of the best defencemen in the league in 10-11, WHILE HE WAS PLAYING. He had 27 points in 35 games and was a +13. At that point, very few guys were playing better. As was stated above, his stats in his first 50 games for the Oilers were ridiculous.

Then he got hurt and he's awful now. Whitney played by far his best hockey as an Oiler, and now he's playing by far his worst hockey.

I'm not going to rag on Whitney. This is a case of injuries ruin a guys career and he's very frustrated. When he was healthy, he was a great defenseman for the Oilers and a great leader.

I don't know why people are saying he has a bad attitude. What type of attitude is he supposed to have right now? He's 29 years old and it looks like his career is wrapping up. It's not like he's Cam Barker and just randomly fell off the face of the Earth. It's due to injuries.

Seems like this is part of the Oilers' problem, though. You need vets who will show the young guys how to play in the league. Whitney (and, to a lesser extent, Smyth) is not being an effective veteran guy, and definitely not a locker room guy. He's just dead weight with a bad attitude these days.
