Ryan Whitney

Seeing Oiler fans putting him in loads of proposals. After opening to the media today one has to think Whitneys days in Edmonton are drawing to a close.

Would Oilers accept a 3rd round pick for him??

Honestly, I think the Oilers will give Whitney every chance to return to form, rather wait till the TDL were they could get a better return.

Judging from the few threads I've seen. Edmonton would accept a hug. In fact, they may insist of giving one.

I hear San Jose is trying to rid themselves of Murray and Handzus. I'm sure the Oilers would take either one for Whitney.

Are they not trying to rid themselves of Murray because they have too many Dmen and are basically sitting him a lot? So why would the be in the market for a more expensive Dman to scratch?

I don't think Cleary has any interest in returning to Edmonton. But he's the type of player we need.

I think we could get more than a 3rd.

Injuries have really caught up with Cleary over the past couple of years. He might not be as hobbled as Whitney, but he can no longer play the game he once did.

At least, that's what I have gathered from my admittedly little DET viewing.

He's a walking injury, his mobility is severely limited now, he can't play defense, he makes a lot of money...

If someone offers the Oilers a 3rd they should have the same reaction as Pekka Rinne's post.

Good defenders have a market. Whitney, outside of a ~50 game window for the Oilers, has been one of the worst defenseman in the league for just about the life of that contract.

Please he has not been close to a good puck mover in the past few seasons. If he was we wouldn't be having this discussion. Hes washed up. Everyone's opinion on him is based on what he used to be but simply put he is not that player. He hasnt been for a while and considering it took him this long to get scratched means he doesnt even understand the problem. Even re watching some games where Whitney was on the pens he was considerably one of the worse defense men and puck movers on the team. He is worse than a pylon considering his cap hit. Oil would be happy if someone wants to give up more than a 3rd for him.

Maybe 1 for 1 but mostly MacArthur adds nothing to Edmonton, bottom 6 is full and he wouldn't crack the top 6. Definitely not worth including a 2nd round pick.

Since he was with the Oilers:

11 points in 19 games
27 points in 35 games
20 points in 50 games

How exactly is that a bad puck mover the past few seasons? This is the year he's taken a huge drop. Even last year 20 points in 50 games is about 32 points in a full season. Not bad at all.

Whitney is the kind of player GMs ask "What will you give me if I take him?". He has negative value.

pull up his gf and ga for 60. pull up his zone exit and offensive entry stats. Over the past years whenever he has been on the ice, the oilers have gone the wrong way. That is plainly visible.

I'll do it for an autographed jersey of your team's hall of famers (so not you Columbus).

If that's the case, which I don't think it is, then he just wouldn't be traded.

I am sure the Oilers will let him play from now till the deadline at times, hope he regains some form, and then either keep him or deal him for a pick at the deadline.

He's definitely not playing well that's for sure.

EDM will hold on to him for now and if they move him it will be at the deadline.Even on Sportnet they are saying there is a market for him. Why give him away, keep him and if he gets his game back then move him.

To be fair, the oilers haven't exactly excelled when he was off the ice either in recent years.
They don't need the space and his contract is expiring, so if they can't get something halfway decent for him, might as well hang on and pray that he can somehow get his game together.
