Good for Versteeg, he should have stuck up for himself. Dirty hit from Ovie, he saw his numbers.

Just saw Ovechkin got the primary assist on a shorthanded goal. Which presumably means he was playing the penalty kill. Is that just some sort of freak occurrence or...?

ESPN reported that incorrectly. There was not even a PP to that point in the period.

Weird, I saw it on TSN and I guess they made the same mistake. Or they get their boxscores updated from the same source maybe. I was gonna say, OV on the PK is definitely a novel idea

Where's Parros or Jovocop to stick up for their teammate?
yeah, because a fighter going after a star player isn't gonna start a ****show. Maybe if it was a guy that typically drops the gloves then yeah, sure, but what you're proposing is very unlikely and it's not like Parros is even gonna be on the ice the same time as Ovi.

Yeh, Versteeg didn't turn at all. It's on both guys. Not just one.

When they see the mismatch, and the linesman likely saw the earlier hit, they have to be thinking "this is not something we need to let happen".

100 point players can sort of get away with not having to answer for the things they've done. It's not necessarily right, but it's been that way since at least the 70s.

I know of no reason why someone like Parros should think twice about jumping a 50 point player who hit one of his stars in the numbers.

If you ask me, Versteeg turned. Maybe Ov should have pulled up (not like he was so committed to the hit that he couldn't have stopped), but my view is that Versteeg needs to protect himself in that situation, not risk death when a guy's got him lined up to try and draw a penalty.

I wouldn't give Ovechkin anything for this, however, Shanahan suspended Kris Letang for a similar play last year on another turning guy, so who knows.

Goal, assist, and 1/2 a fight.

Versteeg turned, Ovie finished his check. Versteeg got angry, cross checked Ovie from behind at center ice, Ovie embellished it. Versteeg is lucky Ovechkin just pulled his jersey over his head and waited for the refs to break it up; he's a monster compared to Versteeg and could have pounded his teeth in.

Move along, nothing to see here.

Also, Ovie with 2 more points tonight. That makes it a 5 game point streak with 7 points in those games if I'm not mistaken.

That was rather sporting of Ovechkin not to pound Versteeg's face in.

If Ovie had roughed him up, he could have had his first Gordie Howe Hat Trick.

There is no justice in this world.
Exclusive 22k per seat club at center ice. Most of the people spend the game in the lounge above the seats eating and drinking the free food. Looks terrible on TV

Not our best crowd, but still had about 11-12k in attendance.

Ovechkin should have gotten a 2 minute boarding minor, especially with the way they have been calling things this year. But yeah, Versteeg also needs to do a better job protecting himself.

As much as I hate Ovy/Caps, there was nothing wrong with that hit. Hits like that are getting questioned so often anymore, and it's rather annoying. His back may have been turned at the time of the hit, but Ovy was within a couple feet when Versteeg turned. For everyone saying Ovy should've stopped up, I'm sure it's not that easy on ice and when you're expecting to check someones shoulders into the boards.

Ovi was smart, not to throw punches on that helmet and shield

While, as pointed out, that situation wasn't shorthanded, Ovie has spent some time on the penalty kill this year. Oates is trying to do the same thing Jersey did with Kovalchuk.

The hit was hard and maybe awkward, but wasn't dirty(Versteeg turns at the last moment. Ovie was going for a shoulder hit). I'm sorry, is hockey no longer a physical contact sport?
