If by "massive" you mean "sit back and let the youngest team in the league develop and come together, while having three first-rounders in an extremely deep draft", then yes, I guess it will be massive.

With the players on the roster and in the system, only a small number of whom are anywhere close to their prime, it would require a lot of work to screw up what's already been assembled.

Speaking of high draft: what is going on with Ryan Johansen?

My first thought when I heard this was: "How many days until they hire Burke"

Sent back down to Springfield and, by all accounts, tearing it up down there.

Jarmo has to be on the very short list, JD did not want him to leave STL, but understood why he left. Jarmo always wanted the chance to be a GM in the NHL. Getting experience at being a GM for his home town team has probably taught him a lot about running a team and he has a ton of experience with the NHL. Jarmo is great at drafting and is not afraid to go outside of the box at the draft (Lars Eller), since CLB has a lot of picks Jarmo could do wonders. He has always had a really good feel for Euros so do not be surprised if all 3 first round picks are from Europe.

As far as the timing JD fired Davis Payne after 13 games last season and pretty much already had it in the works for Hitch to come to STL. JD usually does not make moves unless the next step is already being worked on.

Long time coming. Looking forward to see who Davidson selects as his replacement. The Jackets are definitely on the right track now.

About three years too late.

They should have listened to Nash and fired Howson last year though.

I guess better late than never.

I also don't see Burke in Columbus. Just doesn't seem like a fit. Never know, but I just don't see it happening.

Jarmo makes so much sense in this situation. It would be ideal for one of the sport's top scouting talents to take over a role that will require a rebuild. I loved that STL would allow him to announce the picks at the draft. It's a sign of talent and a well run organization when they let the individual in charge of segment of the business, make the decision and get public notice for it.

Have there been many European GMs before? I'm drawing a blank.

Jarmo will be the first if he is hired.

Crossing my fingers for Kekelainen. I think he as GM and JD as President is a match made in heaven.

Useful reference for folks who are still convinced that the guy was incapable of tying his shoes:

Thanks, Howson, for cleaning up MacLean's toxic waste. Welcome, Kekalainen; let's get good things built!

Hextall seems to be out.

"Elliotte Friedman ‏@FriedgeHNIC Kings say (as of now) Blue Jackets have not asked permission to speak to Ron Hextall."

" Aaron Portzline ‏@Aportzline Told #CBJ very close to naming Howson's replacement. It will not be Davidson. A deal is close, next GM could be introduced Wednesday."

Deal close with someone, but CBJ not talking to Hextall according to LAK.

The standings tell the story.

Considering how much that guy is raving about Vinny Prospal, I'd say his expectations are too low.

Howson should have been fired at the same time Arniel was let go last season. As for this move, I can presume that Todd Richards is instantly on the hot seat, as a new GM would want to bring in his own coach.

At any rate, I surely hope that the next guy can actually draft quality players. The one thing that Howson never did that should have resulted in his dismissal long ago was to bring in a quality veteran backup goalie to motivate and challenge Steve Mason.

Other than, y'know, Matthieu Garon.

Predicted reply: "But obviously he wasn't quality because Howson picked him!"
