Predicted reply: "But obviously he wasn't quality because Howson picked him!"
I'll give you Garon as a quality backup, but challenge Mason, as in challenge for the starting position? I don't think so. That goalie battle was more predetermined than the laughable McCoy-Weeden Browns starting QB competition.
The two guys that would come to mind for me would be Jarmo as many have mentioned.
The other, and I feel most people will turn their noses at this one, would be John Ferguson Jr. He's a good drafter and I think he would excel under a guy who likes to take most of the reigns anyways in John Davidson. I think that pairing could surprise a few people.
Everyone is asking this question. But really don't expect club owners to understand what's going on.
I think it's not necessarily a bad thing. The new regiment doesn't have to worry about that and don't have to be evaluated by that, if that trade turns out to be awful. The key for them is to make good use of those first round picks this summer.
It'd be nice to see Kekäläinen as a first European GM. He has done well in Finland with Jokerit, too, they are just about to clinch the top spot in regular season this year and with the transfer deadline gone he has more or less done his job for the year. It's a bold move by Davidson if he hires Kekäläinen. If it works, he's a genius who hired a young European GM. If it doesn't, he's a tool who hired some inexperienced European guy when he could've hired some Canadian dude with a track record.
Just like Fabian Brunnstrom and Jonas Gustavsson before him, Jarmo is the best not in the NHL. He drafted absolutely incredibly well for YEARS in the NHL and I vehemently agree with CBJ giving him this job. Should be his and IMO anyone else is a mistake. Preemptive gratz to Jarmo.
