I've hesitated to make this thread because Briere has a No Movement Clause and a tricky family situation that might keep him in the Philadelphia area. That said, with the Flyers season spinning out of control, and a growing sense that Briere very well may be bought at out season's end to make room for both much-needed additions and raises for current players, it seems at least possible that he would entertain a short-term move.
His playoff pedigree is well-known, as are his defensive deficiencies.
He is 35, with two years left on his contract, which carries a massive $6.5 million cap hit.
However his actual salary for those final two years is much more modest ($3 million in 2013-14, $2 million in 2014-2015.) A compliance buyout would cost something like $3.5 million after this season.
I think it is safe to assume that he would only waive his NMC for a potential playoff team, so while he could be an appealing option for organizations looking to get to the cap floor on the cheap, that's probably not a viable option. The best fit would probably be a contending team that operates on an internal budget--since his real-money is quite manageable.

If Philly is going to buy Briere out why wouldn't he just stay with the Flyers instead of going to another team that will pay him out the rest of the deal.
Basically if he goes to being a UFA this summer it's not out of the question somebody will give him 3M a year for the next 2-3 years(then he gets the buyout cash from Philly on top of that)

Yup. That's certainly the main reason Briere wouldn't waive, but for the purposes of this thread, assume he would.
(The argument for him accepting a trade is the same as every other veteran player: a chance to win a cup. If he sits in Philly for the rest of the year, that's one less opportunity).

And that he probably has a short list of places he'd like to live. If that team might not have space or might change their mind come the offseason, it's in his best interests to accept the trade. And for a shot at the cup.
If Holmgren can get a) a contender like ANA or STL, who care more about salary than cap hit, to offer a collection of project prospects + 2nd or maybe even a 1st and b) Briere to waive for them, he has a very good deal on his hands. Otherwise I see them maybe getting a late 1st, but also taking bad salary back.

If Briere was willing to waive for the Islanders(I am guessing the only thing going for us would be location), he has Wangs MO all over him(ie cheaper then caphit)
All that being said the Islanders have a better chance signing him as a UFA this summer then getting him to waive his NTC in 2 weeks

I think most Flyers fans would be fine with that kind of return.
Anaheim
St. Louis
Boston?
Those are the three teams that come to mind based solely on money and current standing. St. Louis probably has the least need, but probably presents the best fit going forward. Boston has some injury issues, but Briere's cap hit might present an issue next year. Anaheim is the closest to a logical fit for this year, but probably the biggest ask for waiving the NMC basd on distance from his family.
I want him in Boston.
Jared Knight and 1st round pick
I wouldn't mind that from a Philly standpoint. I'm curious to see what other Boston fans feel about that.
I think you guys are a perfect fit for him. Not too far away from Philly and your defense can cover up his defensive problems. You's can also offer to buy him out at the end of the season, which could be more lucrative for Danny.
What about Winnipeg for Briere? They are looking for scoring help and could have him for the next two years. They have 30 million in cap space next year?

I doubt he would wave his NMC to go there.
I think its either 1) stay and be bought out; 2) waive for an elite team and a cup run, and possibly be bought out; or 3) go to one of a handful of teams where he would be content to finish out his career (OTT, BUF?, PHX?, etc.)
I want him in Boston.

As an outsider for neither team it seems like over payment for him. If Boston fans are happy with that I doubt I see any other team beating that offer. I think Philly should take it without thinking twice.

I think it is probably an overpayment as well--
With each loss, I think it becomes more plausible that Briere entertains waiving his NMC, but maybe that's just wishful thinking. He's definitely not working on a line with Schenn and Simmonds.

understatement for sure. They should get him off there and put him with Hartnell to see if they can re-kindle some magic.
