Let's see.....

Falls out of bed and scores 30 + goals each year.
Very well liked by his teammates.
Vastly improved two way player.
Vastly improved passing skills.
Loves playing in Toronto.
Plays against oppositions best checking lines and shutdown D-Men.
Never complains.
Every shift he seems to get a shot off (meaning he has the puck).

Let's trade the SOB, after all, with his skill set, Nonis can walk outside and pick his replacement off a tree.

Not true. They simply couldn't come to an agreement on dollars and term.

Lock this guy up long term and he'll go down as one of the alltime Leafs greats.

Not true. Boston chose to go with Krejci and Lucic instead; and due to cap issues, couldn't afford to keep Kessel.

No one wants to pay Kessel but everyone is more than content with the awful contracts handed to Grabovski and Lupul. Toronto fans wouldn't know quality over quantity if it smacked them in the forehead.

8 years, 7.5M is the most I'd give him.

He would be 35 years at the end of that deal. How many wingers keep up their production at that age worth $7.5m?

Sounds about fair, expect a deal gets done this summer. Kessel has given no indication whatsoever he wants to leave and his agent intimated informal contact has already happened (my read).

Kessel is worth every penny.

Yes, do people realize as the salary cap increase average salaries do as well. 7.5 mil long term isn't hall of fame money anymore.

Kessel will be worth more than 7.5M in his prime years. Given the UFA market, his market value in those years will be about 8-8.5 M/YR.

8.5
8.5
8.5
7.5
7.5
6.5
6.5
6.5

That looks fair to me.

He may want to finish his career here, but that doesn't mean he wouldn't mind making a few high-paid stops on other teams in between!

Anyways if Nonis is going to move him, do it during the summer or at next year's trade deadline. Now is not the time to be fielding/listening to low-ball offers for your best player.

Neal got 6yx$5m last year.
Ryan got 5yx$5m last year.
Benn got 5yx5.25m this year.
Lucic got 3yx6m last year.

But we should pay Kessel a lot more then these players?

Really?!?! Am i the only person who thinks that Kessel is not a "franchise" player but more a great #2?

I have no doubt that he can put up 5 more 40+ goal seasons in the next 8 years and maybe reach 90+points if paired with the right center but common...how can we give him $7.5 per year for 8 years???

We also loose negotiating power down the road with other players or free agents if we sign Kessel to a deal like that. Stamkos makes $7.5/year...can we really say Kessel = Stamkos?

#1 Center (who is a playmaker) is what we need most! If Getzlaf is available July 1, we go all out for him as far as i am concerned.

5-7 years @ $6.5/year and we show him that we are serious about winning by getting that #1 Center by July 1.

They were all gonna be RFA's. Kessel is gonna be a UFA. BIG difference.

To me the real point is that if you want to build a sustainable winning team, players need to pitch in a bit.

That doesn't mean they should take massive discounts but if Kessel really wants to win, he cant demand $7.5mil/year and expect Nonis to be able to atract the likes of Getzlaf to the team.

I agree that's what he's worth but I doubt Kessel signs that deal.

Maybe 5 years/35 million?
