To be fair, the assumption is he isn't a 35 goal scorer anymore. It's not like he'd be the first guy to put up 35+ goals and lose it.

What I don't get is why people wouldn't be happy about Michalek staying on after this contract (at what I assume would be a reduced rate, considering his injury history) and being a solid 2nd/3rd liner for us for the next 5-6 years.

No one is going to give us "35 goal" value for him in a trade. Go ask Canucks fans if they think they can get "30-goal" value for David Booth(an exaggerated scenario, I admit, but it's along the same lines).

I don't think there's anything unrealistic about expecting another 35 goal season from Michalek.

Its unrealistic because he has a chronic knee injury.

Even if he isn't a 35 goal scorer, he's still a legit top 6 winger on a team that desperately needs more of them. When we get 4 wingers of similar calibre, then I'd be willing to trade him.

I think there's a line to be drawn between the possibility of Michalek having another 35 goal season, and expecting Michalek to have another 35 goal season.

I'm not expecting it, but it's not out of the question.

The question is, can he remain healthy?

It's nice to have a 35 goal winger, but if he's in the press box for half the season, then what's the point?

Doctors have made big advancements in sports medicine over the last thirty years, but the words chronic knee injury scare the bejezus out of me.

Lets not forget of those 35 goals, like 10 of them were empty net.

This.

Simply put, but that's the pure realistic way to look at it. Until we have 4 better (or as good) wingers, I don't want to "get rid of" Milan Michalek

I don't see what's so complicated to understand. Or do people want to go with 4 Rookies/UFAs?

False. 5 were EN goals

Your comp must be really slow, it took me less than a minute to find out that stat, or maybe you don't know how to use NHL.com yet.

He's just not good enough in the playoffs.

He doesn't have that extra gear, he didn't have it in San Jose and he hasn't shown much in Ottawa; he's made some good plays yes (the slap pass to Alfie and SH goal against PIT) but he's a non-factor most of the time.

Might he better off on the second line and easier opposition? Maybe.

If he wants to stay in Ottawa after his contract is done I'd be fine with it but I don't think I'd be comfortable with him being a go-to guy if we want to win the Cup.

See no reason to move him as long as spezza is here. Speed, size, net presence and besides some knee issues whats not to like about him? Not everyone has that extra gear but he isn't being paid as if he does.

I'm expecting him to have multiple 25g, 50p seasons with solid all round abilities. That's makes him worth keeping and worth the $4M that we pay him.

I heard from a friend of an enemy that he is taking his cartwheels easy but going full throttle on somersaults.

I dont see any team trading us a player of MM's quality in trade. We can take a step back and say at worst he'll score 20 goal a season for us and at best he' probably could get 35. This may be stretching it but what if his injury problems went away? I could realistically see him in a spectacular year getting 40 goals. I remember when gaborik used to always be injured and then after signing in new york hasn't had any major problems in awhile. I'm willing to take the risk on MM and hopefully we resign him. MM is a guy who hasnt hit is full potential yet due to injuries and considering were a team with a playoff window open atm i dot want to get rid of him. If he gets injured sure let one of our prospects prove they are better then MM otherwise i want him as a piece of this team.

Usually when it's a contract year the player usually shines, except if you're Latendresse. I bet MM looks to be an impact player this season.

Leave Latendresse alone. It's not his fault he sucks.

Michalek is just like Leclaire

Good player who has rotten luck

You don't win with them, and that really sucks because I'm certain they are good people who deserve a better fate

But what can you do?

We need Milo for now. After being near the bottom of the league in offense, we need to see what our forwards can do this season at least.

For the first time since we went to the Finals and arguably the year after as well(Vermette, Fisher), we have five forwards who can put up 50+ points(Spezza, Ryan, Michalek, Turris, MacArthur) with guys like Conacher, Zibanejad, Greening that may end up hovering around 30-40.

If he stays healthy, I would trade him at the deadline for a slight downgrade for a less often injured 20 goal scorer.
