Ottawa, worst team in years?

Now with both Karlsson, Spezza and Cowen gone for the season - is this the worst NHL-team we have seen in the league in several years?

Right now we have a borderline NHL:er playing on the first line (Zibanejad), flanked with Silfverberg, who is a second liner at best, and a 40 year old Alfredsson with back problems.

On other nights we do have Turris subbing as a first liner, but he isn't a first line center on any other team in the NHL. Michalek was out last night too, but even when he plays he looks lost without Spezza.

Defence is even worse.

Gonchar gets the most ice-time now that Karlsson is gone. And ask any fan of the Senators, he is bad, he's really bad. Phillips is way past his prime, Methot is a good defenceman but without Karlsson he will not look nearly as good as he's been.'

The goalies are the only good part of this team, with Anderson and Lehner, who for some reason is stuck in the AHL.

What do you say, is this the worst NHL-team we have seen in the league in several years?

I'd actually be pretty excited about their young center depth.

No the teams Oilers fielded in the 09/10 and 10/11 was still worse than this in my opinion..

Yeah things look pretty bad right now. But I still think Columbus has them beat for icing a horrible team.

No. They are not. They are still a playoff team as it sits right now and these situations can make a team rally together. In a shortened season this is compounded. I'd like to think that when a team is currently sitting in the top 12 of the league in terms of pole position, we wouldn't write them off as the WORST NHL team in several years.

Troll thread seasons like troll thread. Don't put down your own team, you've lost your best player but give some of your other players a bit of credit. You have one of if not the most respected Captain in the league not named Iginla

We don't have the star talent up front that we use to, but I think we're a more balanced team (when healthy) than previous years . I don't think this is the worst NHL-team in the league today let alone several years..but we're definitely not contending for a cup this year and now with Karlsson out playoffs is probably going to be a stretch.

Spezza only played 5 of 14 games this year and despite that, the Senators are still 4th in the league in shots per 60 minutes at 5v5. Losing Karlsson will hurt, and Anderson has to come back down to Earth at some point, but even without JS+EK, this Senators team is probably better than 5-10 teams in the league this year alone.

The Senators were worse in '10-'11 than they are right now, let alone "worst team in the league in years". Kind of a ridiculous topic.

You forgot to include a goalie who is at the top of his game and will steal 15 wins for them alone this season. They will still be in the playoff mix Imo.

They have a really good goalie and lots of times that can be an equalizer. I'm not sure about playoffs but Anderson is good enough to keep them in the race.

No. Go look at some of the pre-lockout Pens rosters.

Yep, the difference between bad and terrible is often goaltending...

Anderson is a top 10 goalie and will keep them respectable even if they aren't good.

I know your upset with the injury, but Ottawa is still a good team and I see them still challenging for a playoff spot. Especially in a shortened season like this. If Anderson continues to play above his head and Turris continues to develop, who knows? Plus you have a good coach there that could get good results. As a Leafs fan, it's painful to admit, but I still think the Sens could surprise. Keep your head up Sens Fans. You guys still got players like Alffy, Zibanajad, Turris, Silfverberg, etc. See you guys on Saturday. Cheers!

Honestly, we're a really bad team without those three. Although removing the #1C, #1D, and #2D from any team is a recipe for disaster. Anderson and Karlsson's dominance has been all that has sustained the team through the past few games. It will be a tough year and an absolute miracle if we manage to make the playoffs. Ah well, that's sports for you I guess, and this still isn't the worst team of the past decade or so.

Coming back to the mean is not equivalent to injuries to multiple key players.

They were both in the Hart trophy voting last year for a reason.

The team is going to be boring, and considering how much difficulty Ottawa has had scoring over the past 5 or so games, it's only going to get worse.

Remove the 1C and 1D from just about any team and they'll look bad.

All he wants is Swedish players to be surrounded by the best players possible.

He doesn't care about the Senators at all.

I think everyone's underestimating the Sens. I think they'll be fine, they've made a living the last two seasons by having a team that's well-coached and works their tail off to pull off wins, no matter what the personal is.
