Defense and goaltending main strengths in New Jersey Devils top 20

Even prior to a wild and unpredictable 2013 off-season, the New Jersey Devils were going to see a lot of competition on their NHL roster from young prospects, most notably on defense, where the organization is deep and skilled. Despite the amount of veteran depth on paper in the organization, several forwards in the system could also fight their way into the NHL lineup.

1. (1) Jon Merrill, D, 8.0C
Drafted 2nd round, 38th overall, 2010

In Jon Merrill's final year with Michigan, Wolverines coach Red Berenson praised his growth in maturity as Merrill recuperated from a vertebra injury. Upon his return, Michigan made a run to the CCHA championship game.… read more

Might want to fix this:

Quote:
20. (NR) Ryan Kujawinski, D, 6.5D
Drafted 3rd round, 73rd overall, 2013

There is a lot to like about Kujawinski. The physical defenseman plays hard in the offensive zone thanks to his dynamic skating and puck possession.

Fun read. Excited for Merrill this year. Would put a lot of the lame "no offense from the blueline" criticisms to rest.

It's nice to see guys like Kujawinski and Black at the bottom of a list of 20 prospects. And beyond that, there's still guys like Pesonen and Thomson and Johnson and Bell that could all end up at good depth guys some day. Our prospect pool isn't much compared to the rest of the NHL, but it's miles ahead of where it was 4 or 5 years ago.

Yup. This will hopefully happen in 2014-2015.
