Everyone keep this in mind: he's now either an Av for at least a year or a Flame.
If the Avs match, they are barred from trading him for a calendar year.

Avs need to take the picks. Flames will be drafting high.

I was hoping O'Reilly could fill the Drury role in Buffalo, so maybe he'll follow Drury's career and go from the Avs to Calgary for a year, then joining the Sabres.

Would you trade mackinnon/jones/Drouin/barkov for radar? Feaster may just have.

I wouldn't but I have a bad feeling we're taking a run to 12th pick in which case I wouldve loved this signing

Pttth. Calgary is 7-7 and 3 pts out of 8th in the East. If they add RoR they aren't gonna finish in the top 5 draft spots.

still no guarantees theyll improve enough to make a playoff run, or out play the other 8-12 teams out West. Colorado could very well have 2 shots at winning the Lotto.

Maybe Feaster will do that thing again where he basically give us stuff for free. ROR + 2nd for Sulzer + Mancari + 3rd.

Why does everyone think that? They're usually a middle of the pack team, and they've gotten some worse-than-what-they're-used-to goaltending this year with Kipper missing some games/not starting very well. I'm sure they'll be in the hunt for a playoff spot.

I'd take that bet for something reasonable. Such a significant improvement to what they have. Not saying it's impossible but there's a better chance they sneak in the playoffs than finishing in the bottom 3 IMO. We might not be able to find out though.

Apparently there's an escalator in the contract that after it's up, if the team doesn't qualify him with a 6.5 mil offer, he becomes a UFA. I love O'Reilly but I don't think I could pay him 6.5. Still would be a guy to target in a year (maybe re-work that language), but time to move on for now.

Assuming O'Reilly refuses to play for the Avs, what kind of penalties would he face?

No such "escalator" exists, nor can you add conditions like that.

Not qualifying an RFA simply leads to them becoming a UFA.

Does the rule for the tender amount depend on the cap hit or the final year salary or something else entirely?

The contract was backloaded, so if it's based on the final year's salary, then that is in essence the de facto "escalator" in that it would force the tender to be at 6.5M.

Yes, qualifying offers are based off of Paragraph 1 (NHL) salary minus signing bonuses.

It seemed like the poster was implying that there was a condition in the contract that made him a UFA if he wasn't qualified for $6.5m when the deal was up, but that's just the nature of QO's.
If you don't tender a player, they become a UFA.

Even if conditions like that were able to be added, matched offer sheets only carry salary and term over.
Any included clauses (NMC/NTC) included in the offer sheet are null (however they can be added to the contract after matching).
