Minor Montreal/Ottawa trade

To Ottawa:
Yannick Weber

To Montreal:
2014 3rd rounder

Reason why Ottawa does this:

Current Sens defense:
Methot---Gonchar
Lundin---Weircioch
Phillips---Benoit

Karlsson is out for the season and Weber can provide some offense and be a stop gap.

Weber can step into the bottom pair and play second PP unit.

Sens traded this years 2nd rounder to St. Louis for Ben Bishop. Not looking to move 2nd and 3rd rounder in this years draft. The 3rd rounder will be in next years draft.

Weber only making 850k this season. Cap friendly contract.

Why Montreal does this:

Weber has potential and needs a change of scenery.

Weber is now the 8th defenceman on the Habs. Getting a draft pick is better than him sitting in the press box.

Please let me know what you think.

Good value but no thanks. Ottawa's gonna get a good look at Borowiecki, Gryba and Wiercioch while we're in **** storm mode. Maybe at the deadline if there's more injuries and Gonchar doesn't return another D.

We have enough #6 D. Don't even think I'd trade a 3rd for him anyways.

sens don't need spare parts in exchange for picks/prospects. building from within seems to be the most logical thing to do.

The value is there. I wouldn't expect much more than that from any other team. Probably less from most teams.

The only thing is, why does Montreal do this. I get what you wrote there. A draft pick is better than a wasted asset. Asset management they all say. But the other side of the asset management coin looks like this. Why would Montreal help Ottawa. Looking at the standings, Mtl is 5th and Ott is 7th just 1 tiny point behind Mtl. NJ is at the top 2 points ahead. 9th place is only 4 points behind Mtl. So one little slump or one good winning streak for either team can make a whole lot of difference this season.

I don't see Montreal doing this just to help out Ottawa. Nothing personal, but it could end up being the Sens or the Habs fighting for 8th and 9th and Mtl shouldn't be sending guys to Ott that have a chance to bite them in the rear. Now if Ott was sitting 12th or lower, then I could see a trade.

I'm not sure how Weber would help Ottawa to be honest.

Pass from MTL. I'd be too skeptical that Weber would kill us with that point shot.

If this was out of division, I'd accept though.

I'd take a 5th for Weber.

Guy has a big time shot, but he can't hit the net. Doesn't know how to get open and suck everywhere else.

I was going to offer a 5th. I support the move as a Sens fan but I don't think he's worth a 3rd when you compare to recent deals.

Weber is versatile...he reminds me of a four season tire...ok in all conditions but just not great at anything. Low cost, versatile, easy to coach...but low value. Agreed that he is not worth a third, but given the high probabilities of injuries this year and the facts aforementioned, I don't think that a fourth or fifth would be an incentive to trade at this point. Maybe at the deadline if the Habs D gets spared from injuries.

This, i'd much rather get Ellerby for a 5th than Weber for a 3rd.
