ESPN: Fan Cost Index up 7.9%, attendance up 1.1%

Quote:
Increased ticket prices, prior knowledge of a looming lockout and theoretical bad feelings of fans haven't hurt NHL ticket sales this season. Through games of Feb. 12, the NHL had an average attendance of 17,652, a 1.1 percent increase from last season's average of 17,455. Last season, the NHL had a 1.8 percent increase in attendance with 15 teams drawing average crowds with 100 percent or higher of capacity.

Team Marketing Report arranges its study through Fan Cost Index prices. The Fan Cost Index is the price to take a family of four to a game, including tickets, drinks, hot dogs, parking and the like. The NHL average this season is $354.82, a 7.9 percent increase from last season's survey.
If these numbers hold up, gate revenues should rise about 9%. There's also the new NBCSN contract.

What does this mean? The salary cap could actually be above the agreed $64m next season and rise from there. Meanwhile, the NHL is still on the hook for $300m in make whole payments.

Anyway to hide this thread from kdb. Poor guy's heart can only take so much.

The cap will be $64.3M next year. It is the 2014-2015 season that would reflect increases is they remain in place.

Isn't that more or less in line with the projections the PA put forth during negotiations?

There are a lot more seats available and it's targeted towards family and fans not corporate.

Pretty sure that was assuming that revenues would take a bigger hit than they have.

Twice as many games. Stadiums twice as large. Plus the view appears to suck from just about everywhere (never been to a game). I'm actually surprised prices are that high.

personally, I'm more surprised seeing the NBA being cheaper than the NHL.

The Payroll Range for 2013/14 has been defined per the MOU.

Lower Limit: $44 Million
Midpoint: $54.15 Million
Upper Limit: $64.3 Million

Beginning in 2014/15, and on a going forward basis, the Payroll Range will be calculated as:

Lower Limit: 15% below Midpoint
Midpoint: 50% of HRR / # of Teams
Upper Limit: 15% above Midpoint

Caveat: The Upper Limit may never fall below $64.3 Million. The range between the Upper Limit and Lower Limit may never be less than $16 Million or greater than $28 Million

That has changed the last 5-7 years.

NBA prices have actually gone down and NHL scooted past them.

They market thousand of seats for $5-10 in the upper levels at many ballparks. Brings the average down.

Classic. The view sucks but you've never been to a game.

For the record, whenever you decide to go, get a seat in the middle level along either the third- or first-base side. You're welcome.

Article is very misleading considering ticket prices were set BEFORE the lock-out was enacted.
