I hope they put Fehr in Brouwers spot on the power play. F16 has a nicer shot, right handed and roofs it in close. Brouwer doesn't really get dirty in front and that shot from the slot gets chest pad everytime.

Isn't it about time MJ gets another chance? I'm not sure much more watching from the press box is going to improve his game, and he certainly is losing trade value. Maybe the Nazim Kadri growth can be an inspiration to him.

Mojo is on IR. I imagine once he returns he will be in the lineup.

I know, just didn't remember how long. I figured it was a wink wink "injury" type of thing.

So a very unsubstantiated rumor is that the Avs haven't yet filed the paperwork to match O'Reilly's offer sheet. Ignoring whether or not that's true, if they decide to screw over the Flames and he goes on waivers, the Caps would have the second priority.

Would you be in favor of claiming him?

With a $6.5M qualifying offer next season? No thanks.

1.) Think Bob Mac already debunked (they filed last night).

2.) Don't the Caps move to the end of the wire since they claimed Volpatti?

3.) Unequivocally yes, claim him. You get a good/great player for nothing. Who cares if his QO is too high? Let him walk as a UFA if it's that big an issue, you got him for nothing. Cap situation would be the only hitch (and I think you could get him to sign for less than 6.5 AAV if you gave him term).

Yeah, because giving up nothing to get him for 2 years is worse than giving up nothing not to have him at all.

Colorado is clearly gonna try to tank their way to the bottom of the league this week so they have waiver priority at the end of the week.

Then get O'Reilly + 1st + 3rd.

Nope. Real NHL waivers don't work like fantasy sports waivers. It's always based on season standings (except near the very beginning of a season, if I recall correcly, during which it's based on the previous season's final standings). The last place team can claim everyone if they want.

On a related note, say Colorado hasn't actually filed the paperwork. Is there anything stopping the Blue Jackets from trading (or giving) something to Colorado in order to get them to reject the offer sheet? Like give them a 3rd or something to make their decision easier?

Another scenario is that Colorado could call up Calgary and demand something in order to have them match the offer sheet. Like "give us a 2nd and a 3rd or we reject the offer sheet and you end up losing a 1st and a 3rd".

That's a good point that I didn't consider. I do worry though if his salary and cap hit would inhibit management from making other moves.

I think they could trade something to them for "future considerations." I don't know how much leeway they have in how something is defined, but stuff like that has happened in the past especially with expansion drafts IINM.

Yeah that contract might get in the way of a Tom Poti extension

More like that contract might get in the way of a Mike Ribeiro extension or top-4 defenseman acquisition.

Give me O'Reilly over Ribeiro all things considered. That's why I'd do it easily. You just shift the extension risk from this season to next.

The Capitals just need to hire a groin specialist or something.

For a team that likes to protect their nuts, they don't seem to be very good at it, I give you Mike Green, Brooks Laich and previously Semyon Varlamov, also I believe Vokoun never had any injury problems developed groin issues once here.

He was put on IR retroactively when Wellman was called up. Then they sent Wellman back and used the roster spot to claim Volpatti.

You take ROR if you get him for nothing. There are plenty of spare parts on this team taking up cap space that can go if ROR works out. If he doesn't then just don't qualify him.

Woorying about his QO limiting the ability to keep the roster of a 29th place team together is laughably stupid.

Assuming there was a "scoring" wing somewhere in the league on waivers while we were chilling in the cellar, I would like to think George should have seized the moment of futility and take a chance on someone to test in our top 6.

Especially since its clear there is no one in Hershey that will help this year.

Getting Volpat is a good start but we need a scoring winger. I am not sure Oates system will ever work properly without an upgrade.

I'd like to question the long-term projecions for this team. My opinion is that this team is very deep in future talent. I think in 2014-15 season we may see as many as seven players on this team hitting 55 points. That is, of course, is a subject to a few ifs but isn't impossible, IMO. Those players are Ovechkin, Backstrom, Ribeiro, Forsberg, Brouwer and Kuznetsov and the guy Caps select with their high pick this year (Barkov is my fav, though I wouldn't be frustrated with Drouin). I think it's pretty good.

For example:
Drouin/Laich - Ribeiro - Ovechkin (aka no defense)
Forsberg - Backstrom - Brouwer
X - Barkov/Laich - Wilson
Hendricks - Beagle - X

If we pick 1st OA and CBJ 2nd OA, do you think CBJ or would you do:

1st OA + Tom Wilson

For

Ryan Murray + Ryan Johansen?

CBJ is pretty stocked on the back end and with 1st and 2nd OA they could draft McKinnon and Drouin

Caps get two more NHL ready prospect that fill their needs better (Two-way LD and center with size and hands).
